Shelter Island Lions fundraiser at GBCC supports local needs

Thanks to the support of local businesses, individuals, and dozens of Gardiner’s Bay Country Club members, the Shelter Island Lions Club raised over $12K on Saturday to support local needs.

The annual fundraiser recognizes the contributions of returning WWII veterans — many of them Lions Club members — in restoring the golf course, which had been planted with lima beans to support the war effort.

GBCC member John Daileader donated his winnings from the member/guest tournament earlier this year, and the club pitched in even more. GBCC board member Larry Kast presented the Lions with a check at the first tee during the event on Saturday, July 29.

The Chequit, Chez Marie, Isola, The Pridwin Hotel and Cottages, Serafina of East Hampton, and Sunset Beach contributed prizes of gift certificates or dinners that were essential in making the day a great success.

In addition, PGA Golf Professionals Bob DeStefano, Dan Lockhart, and Quinn Ourada donated teaching lessons as golf prizes.

Head Professional Leigh Notely personally donated a prize from the golf shop as well as valuable time spent calculating the net scores of the approximately 70 participants.

On behalf of the Lions Club, GBCC members Chris Carey, Don Regan, Larry Rosenberg, Mike Stromberg, and I manned the first tee. Our goals were to raise awareness of needs on the Island and raise funds for the ongoing work of the Shelter Island Lions Club, the largest Lions chapter in Suffolk County.
