Two deer vs. car accidents top the Shelter Island police blotter for September 5 through 11.

David R. Porello of East Islip reported he was traveling northbound on South Cartwright Road on Wednesday, September 7, around 8:07 AM, when a deer ran out and struck his vehicle, causing more than $1,000 in damage.

Around 9:37 PM the same day, Elizabeth Cummings of Shelter Island told SIPD she was driving in Mashomack Preserve back to her residence when a deer ran into the roadway striking her vehicle; damage was less than $1,000. The responding officer dispatched the injured deer.

Traffic stops

SIPD stopped and ticketed drivers as follows:

  • On Monday, September 5
    • Carolyn M. Marzo of Boston at 10:55 AM on New York Avenue for speeding 37 miles per hour in a 25-mph zone
    • Armando Rodriguez Trujillo of Elizabeth, NJ at 2:14 PM on Cedar Avenue for driving the wrong way down a one-way street
    • Elana W. Royer of Aspen at 2:43 PM on North Ferry Road for operating a vehicle while using a portable electronic device
  • Effimia Deligiani of Shelter Island Heights on Friday, September 9 at 9:57 AM on St. Mary’s Road for failure to stop at a stop sign
  • On Sunday, September 11
    • Gerard Hammerschmidt of Greenwich at 9:02 AM on South Ferry Road for an unregistered trailer
    • Kenneth Reese of East Moriches at 1:04 PM on North Ferry for speed not reasonable and prudent

SIPD also issued 33 warnings during traffic stops and 21 parking tickets.

Monday, September 5

Around 1:02 AM, SIPD responded to a report of loud music at a West Neck business; the manager agreed to lower the volume. Later that morning, bay constables ticketed two people for keeping undersized porgies (see details above).

A Center caller reported seeing an injured deer around noon; the animal was gone when the responding officer arrived. SIPD reunited a lost wallet and its owner. An officer assisted with ferry traffic in the Heights around 1 PM, issuing three warnings and one ticket (details above).

An officer conducting distracted driving enforcement in the Center observed no violations. Around 4:12 PM, volunteers from the Shelter Island Fire Department responded to an automated alarm in the Heights; it was a false alarm.

A bay constable brought safely to shore two people in a flipped canoe off Ram Island with no personal flotation devices. A Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS) transported an aided case to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH).

A bay constable canvassed Island beaches assisting Southold PD in locating a missing kayaker; the person turned up safe at home. A Menantic caller turned in a found bicycle. Just after 11 PM, a caller reported running out of gas en route to the South Ferry; an officer gave her a lift and helped arrange for the car to be towed.

SIPD was investigating a report of noise and possible criminal mischief in an ongoing dispute between neighbors.

Tuesday, September 6

At 4:51 AM, SIPD responded to a West Neck location where a caller said items had been removed from a safe. Later that morning, a bay constable replaced a burned-out bulb that a passerby reported on a navigation buoy. A caller reported she’d lost a clutch bag; later, she called back to say it had been found.

On Ram Island, a caller said items left on a beach had been vandalized. A Center caller reported a dog at large; the responding ACO found it and returned it home. An officer conducting distracted driving enforcement in the Center observed no violations. A Menantic caller reported a dog at large; the responding ACO found it.

An officer conducting radar enforcement in the Menatic area observed no violations. SIPD placed a found bicycle wheel in the impound lot. An officer removed a fallen limb from a Center roadway.

Wednesday, September 7

A passerby reported an injured deer in a Center roadway just after midnight; the responding officer dispatched the injured animal. Later that morning, an officer conducting radar enforcement in the Heights observed no violations.

A boater reported that the Coecles Harbor entrance buoy was off station; a bay constable found it adrift and fixed it temporarily to a mooring and notified the Coast Guard of plans to replace it later in the day.

In Westmoreland, an automated burglary alarm evoked a police response; the homeowner said it was an accidental activation. An officer conducting distracted driving enforcement in the Center observed no violations. SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/ELIH.

Thursday, September 8

An officer conducting an early morning distracted driving enforcement in the Center observed no violations.

The Suffolk County Water Authority notified SIPD that it had turned off the water to a residence pending repairs and requested a well-being check. The responding officer found the homeowner was prepared with sufficient bottled water and advised her to call SIPD if she needed any assistance.

A Menantic resident complained of dog barking for two hours; the responding officer heard barking but wasn’t able to locate the source before the barking stopped. SIPD assisted a person who fell at home but wasn’t injured.

Friday, September 9

At a Heights establishment, an automated smoke alarm sounded around 6:47 AM; the manager said it was a false alarm. In Silver Beach, an officer assisted a caller who was locked out of a house.

In the Center, an officer dispatched an injured deer. SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/ELIH. An officer conducting distracted driving enforcement in the Center observed no violations.

Saturday, September 10

Just after midnight, an officer dispatched an injured deer and notified the Highway Department for removal. Later that morning, an officer performed an ECL check at Hiberry Lane where eight people were fishing, and observed no violations.

A Heights caller reported a woodchuck in distress; the responding ACO captured it and transported it to a wildlife rehabilitation center. SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/ELIH.

SIPD assisted a caller who’d fallen a home but was not injured. A Heights caller reported a bicycle left leaning on a tree in her yard; SIPD removed it to the impound lot. A caller reported losing an item at Wades Beach.

An officer conducting radar enforcement in the Heights issued four verbal warnings. Around 7 PM, a caller reported a fire at Piccozzi’s Marina; turns out people were grilling aboard a yacht. In the Center, a caller reported noise; the responding officer spoke with a person at the location who said the music would end at 9 PM.

Around 8:15 PM, a West Neck caller reported loud music from a boat; an officer onshore was able to get the attention of the boat operator, who lowered the volume. An officer conducted a foot patrol in the West Neck area and observed no problems.

Just before midnight in Hay Beach, a caller reported loud music; the homeowner at the noisy location agreed to shut the music off.

Sunday, September 11

At 2:48 AM, a Center caller reported strange sounds outside his home; the responding officer found several deer near a Bilco door and advised the caller they might’ve caused the noise.

A Hay Beach caller reported a power outage; SIPD notified PSEG for repairs. The ACO captured an injured squirrel reported in the Westmoreland area and brought it to a wildlife rehabilitation center.

A bay constable conducted an ECL check at Reel Point and issued summonses for keeping undersized porgies (details above). A caller reported a boat fire off Mashomack near Cedar Point; SIPD assisted Southampton and Sag Habor emergency responders. One person was aboard, and no one was injured.

A Shorewood caller reported a dog at large; the ACO scanned it, found a microchip, and reunited the dog with its owner. Smoke during cooking activated an alarm at a Hay Beach residence; there was no emergency.
