Police blotter April 4 to 10

A chimney fire tops the Shelter Island police blotter for April 4 to 10; no injuries or property damage were reported.

Volunteers from the Shelter Island Fire Department (SIFD) responded when a caller reported flames coming from a Heights chimney on Saturday, April 9, around 7:47 PM. SIFD cleared the blockage in the chimney and advised the homeowners to have the chimney inspected before using the fireplace again.

Officers stopped and ticketed these drivers as follows:

  • David B. Darling of Grand Prairie, TX, on Tuesday, April 5, around 5:58 PM on North Ferry Road for improper plates and driving an unregistered motor vehicle
  • Jaime J. Contreraras Zumba of East Hampton on Saturday, April 9, around 1:02 PM on Manwaring Road for failure to stop at a stop sign

Officers issued five warnings to drivers during traffic stops.

Monday, April 4

A caller reported a possible violation of a protection order. SIPD followed up on a previously reported incident.

Tuesday, April 5

A caller reported items missing — possibly stolen — from a Center residence over several weeks. A person wearing a medical alert accidentally triggered the alarm while sleeping.

A West Neck dog went missing; the animal control officer (ACO) canvassed the area, contacted neighbors, and posted on social media. The dog was located the next day.

A passerby found a passport card and turned it in at SIPD HQ, where the owner later retrieved it. An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Heights and observed no violations.

Wednesday, April 6

SIPD responded to an alarm in the Winthrop area just after midnight; the caretaker and responding officer found no sign of criminality. Near 3 AM, an officer on patrol spotted an open trunk on a vehicle with no signs of criminal activity.

Later that day, an alarm sounded at a Ram Island residence; the caretaker responded. A caller requested a well-being check; the responding officer found the person in good health with no complaints.

A Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS) transported an aided case to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. A cleaning crew inadvertently tripped an alarm at a West Neck location. A Center caller notified SIPD that a floating dock had washed ashore.

A Hay Beach caller reported a downed tree; the Shelter Island Highway Department removed it. SIPD told a caller not to contact the department absent an emergency and instead call Suffolk County’s DASH program for support/assistance.

Thursday, April 7

A burglary alarm sounded at a Center residence; the building was secure, and the owner agreed to shut off the device pending a scheduled service call. An officer performed distracted driving enforcement in the Center and observed no violations.

SIPD documented a tenant/landlord dispute. SIFD volunteers responded to an alarm at a Hay Beach location; there was no emergency. SPID agreed to provide extra patrols and recommended that a Center caller immediately notify police if he sees unknown persons in his yard.

Friday, April 8

A caller reported a missing trailer and license plate (no larceny was reported). An officer assisted with traffic control at a vaccine booster program at the Shelter Island Public Library.

A caller reported that someone had purchased a cellphone utilizing her personal identification, including her name, date of birth, and Social Security number. SIPD issued a form to a caller who lost a driver’s license. House painters inadvertently activated a burglary alarm in Hay Beach.

SIPD assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle.

Saturday, April 9

A caller reported an injured osprey; the ACO captured it and brought it to a veterinarian for humane euthanasia due to the severity of its injuries.

A burglary alarm sounded at Center residence; the caretaker was on the scene and said the system had been malfunctioning. SIEMS transported an aided case to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH).

Sunday, April 10

SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for further medical attention. A passerby reported an open door at a Hay Beach residence; the responding officer found no sign of criminality.

A Heights caller reported a dog eating a dead rabbit; the dog was gone when SIPD arrived. In the Center, a caller said a trailer was parked on a corner creating a traffic hazard. The responding officer told the driver to move the trailer off the roadway and issued warnings for a parking violation and trailer registration expiration.

SIPD followed up on a report of a possibly intoxicated cyclist weaving in traffic on North Ferry Road but couldn’t locate the individual.
