Shelter Island Fire Department volunteers extinguished a Longview house fire early Wednesday morning that may have started with an unattended candle, according to a police report.

At 12:20 a.m. a Shelter Island Police Department officer was dispatched to a reported 911 hang-up call, the report said.

“Upon arrival, police requested Shelter Island Fire Department dispatched to a structure fire which was located on the side of the residence,” Det./Sgt. Jack Thilberg said in a news release.

“Prior to the arrival of the police and fire department, the homeowner had begun fire suppression with a garden hose, and the fire department extinguished any remaining fire,” Thilberg said.

There were no reports of injuries to the two occupants of the Tim’s Trail residence or responding fire personnel.

An investigation concluded the fire was accidental, Thilberg said, and “revealed that an unattended candle which had been lit earlier in the evening, and recovered at the point of origin, could not be eliminated as the cause of the fire.”
