Community Housing Board hosts ADU forum

The Community Housing Board hosts an ADU forum to provide information about grants of up to $125K for homeowners interested in creating an accessory dwelling unit for affordable housing on their property.

The event is Friday, June 16, at 5:30 PM in the Shelter Island Public Library’s lower-level Community Room.

The CHB is partnering with the Community Development Corporation of Long Island as one of 10 communities selected for New York State’s brand new Plus One ADU program. Up to $2M in funding is available for Shelter Island ADUs. The grant funding can be applied to the construction of a new structure or the development of an ADU within an existing space.

“ADUs benefit homeowners, renters, and the community by creating more housing options while maintaining the character of single-family residential suburban and rural communities,” the CHB says on its Town webpage. “For homeowners, a code-compliant ADU can provide an additional source of income, flexibility for multi-generational housing, and an increase in property value.”

The NYS Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) — the state’s affordable housing agency — created the Plus One ADU program. After funding was established in the recently adopted state budget, HCR selected local municipalities to administer it with community development partners. In the initial funding round, 10 communities, including Shelter Island, were selected. Nearby, the towns of Southampton and Southold are also on board, partnering with CDCLI and the Long Island Housing Partnership, respectively.

Anyone interested in learning more about the grant program is encouraged to attend the forum. Applications are in the works and expected in July. Among the details being ironed out are income eligibility, tenant selection criteria, and rental rate standards.
