Behind the scenes views of the COVID vaccine pod

Photographer K.C. Bailey, who specializes in images for film and television, volunteered to give our readers a behind the scenes views of the Shelter Island COVID vaccine pod.

We thank her for helping us tell the story of this very special event that brought relief to 503 members of our Island community.

Using images and recorded interviews, K.C. created this short, black and white film:

Challenges

This was a challenging assignment because vaccination programs are covered by medical privacy rules — we could photograph and interview only those people who gave us permission to do so.

For this reason, we ask that no one draw conclusions about the scope or impartiality of the event from these visual presentations — those who are shown represent the many who are not.

It was not possible to capture the scale of the effort made by the Town and school district, and the enormous cadre of volunteers who pitched in to create the POD with just 48-hour notice.
