Artist events at Ram Design Home, SI History Center, Dirt Beauty, and The Chequit

Ram Design Home artists talks
Works by Malcolm Kriegel, who is featured in the next Ram Island Home meet the artist talk on August 11. Later, hear from the children of artist Alan Shields at the History Center.

Take note of numerous artist events this week: Ram Design Home presents a conversation with glass artist Malcolm Kriegel, while the Shelter Island History Center offers a talk about the work of the late Alan Shields with his children.

While both are scheduled for the evening of Thursday, August 11, they’re at staggered times, enabling Island art lovers to attend both.

On Saturday, August 13, from 5 to 9 PM, Dirt Beauty hosts an opening reception for Argentine artist Isadora Capraro. Ongoing, there’s an exhibition at The Chequit of works by Ana Martinez Orizondo entitled “Tree Stories.”

And, mark your calendars for the upcoming ARTsi open studio tour and the Chamber of Commerce Art Show & Craft Fair.

Malcolm Kriegel at Ram Design Home

Meet Kriegel and learn about his process and journey as an artist in an open house from 4 to 6 PM, with an artist Q&A at 5 PM. Ram Design Home (181 North Ferry Road) will serve light refreshments.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Kriegel attended a specialized art school in Manhattan where he received vocational training in technical theater. He earned a BFA with a focus on glass at Tulane University.

Kriegel furthered his knowledge of the glass medium at Pilchuck Glass School, Urban Glass, YAYA, and the Chrysler Museum. He also completed a course at the IYRS School of Technology and Trades in Newport, where he expanded his knowledge of digital modeling and fabrication. He worked at Daniel Clayman in Providence, prior to returning to Brooklyn, where he’s a studio technician and a freelance glass artist at Urban Glass.

Jason and Vicki Shields on their father

Works are displayed in the upper gallery at the Shelter Island History in the “Once on This Island” exhibition through Labor Day.

As part of a series of talks around the “Once on This Island” exhibition, curator Margaret Garrett will speak with Jason and Vicki Shields, the children of artist Alan Shields.

Six works by Shields are included in the eight-artist exhibition, and the grand-opening show at the new gallery in the expanded History Center solely focused on the work of this artist, beloved by Islanders.

Doors open at 5:30 PM for the talk, which begins at 6 PM. The Shelter Island Historical Society suggests a $5 donation to support its work. RSVP at info@shelterislandhistorical.org or 631-749-0025. The exhibition runs through Labor Day.

Isadora Capraro at Dirt Beauty

Isadora Capraro, “Handstand” 2020, mixed media on canvas | The artist’s work is on display through September 11 at Dirt Beauty Gallery.

Dirt Beauty (17 Grand Avenue) hosts an exhibition of works by Capraro through September 11, with an opening reception on Saturday, August 13 from 5 to 8 PM.

Capraro, who works and lives in Southampton, is a native of Italy, but immigrated to Argentina when she was young. She attended the Academia de Bellas Artes Manuel Belgrano in Buenos Aires, and came to the U.S. intending to apprentice for an artist while completing her education. She’s worked for artists of note in LA, NYC and the Hamptons while developing her own artwork.

Capraro has participated in group shows, and her work is in private collections in Buenos Aires, New York and Mexico. But this is the artist’s first solo show in the United States, says curator Patricia Foulkrod.

“Isadora’s paintings construct a universe in which the human figure tenderly merges with the subtle world of nature,” a synopsis on her website says. “Her characters are committed to the important task of inhabiting the self, performing this job in peace and with silent joy.”

Dirt Beauty is open Thursday through Monday from 10 AM to 4 PM, or by appointment, call 310-980-7798.

Ana Martinez Orizondo’s ‘Tree Stories’

Ana Martinez Orizondo, Tree story short II, soft pastels on 8 x 10 Shizen paper.

You can see Orizondo’s works on display at The Chequit (23 Grand Avenue) through August 16.

“Like a tree in a forest, you were born to be a unique individual expression and a member of a collective at the same time, creating something larger and more meaningful than the sum of its parts,” Orizondo says on her website.

“I believe meaning and connection is available to all of us. It can be experienced when we allow ourselves to express ourselves without apology or self-judgment.”

To learn more about the artist, visit her website, anamartinezorizondo.com/.

The Chequit, recently re-opened after an extensive restoration, is pleased to feature artwork in the public spaces on the inn’s main level. Orizondo’s exhibit is the first. The inn is open daily and all are welcome to view the artwork.
