Police: Pedestrian struck by a delivery truck, seriously injured

Despite taking all proper safety precautions, a pedestrian was struck by a delivery truck and seriously injured over the long holiday weekend, Shelter Island police reported Monday.

Lucille C. Morgan, 66, of Shelter Island, suffered serious head and body injuries in the accident at around 5:14 PM on November 27, according to a news release by SIPD Det/Sgt Jack Thilberg. A Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team transported her to Southampton Hospital. She was later transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital.

SIPD says Michael Eso, 52, of Mastic was driving the delivery truck along Gardiner’s Bay Drive when just north of the intersection of Ram Island Drive he apparently became distracted and left the roadway, striking Morgan.

“The pedestrian was wearing a reflective safety vest, was walking on the appropriate side of the roadway and in the correct direction of travel, and was displaying a light,” the police report said, adding that she moved off the roadway as the truck approached.

SIPD says “the accident investigation status remains active and summonses for violations of the NYS traffic law are anticipated.”
