Female anglers will share their knowledge and skills at a Women’s Fishing Expo at Connetquot River State Park Preserve. The goal is to provide hands-on instruction and experiential learning in a fun and supportive environment.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and New York State Parks will host this second-ever event. It takes place at the park on Saturday, September 24 from 10 AM to 2 PM. It will be run by women anglers and fisheries professionals. Primary for women and girls, the expo also provides networking opportunities for women-owned businesses and fishing clubs.

Participants will learn about fishing opportunities on Long Island and around the state. What’s more, they’ll learn basic and intermediate fishing skills, basic knots, and fisheries management. There will be fly-tying demonstrations, fly-casting instruction, a trout hatchery tour, marine fishing information, and free fly fishing on the Connetquot River. Participants age 14 and older may take part in fly casting and fly fishing activities at the expo.

“Women and girls are a vital and fast-growing part of New York’s angling and outdoor recreation community,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said. He added that he hopes the Women’s Fishing Expo will ” inspire the next generation of anglers.”

“Fishing is an enjoyable way to interact with the amazing natural surroundings of Long Island and New York State,” said Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid “I thank our partners at DEC for helping introduce more women to this delightful and lifelong sport.”

“DEC is excited to bring back this wonderful program,” DEC Acting Regional Director Merlange Genece said. “Long Island has fantastic areas for fly-fishing. We are excited to introduce this rewarding activity to women who may not have had the opportunity to cast a line.”
