Weather service issues high wind warning for our area

NOAA satellite image | As the Nor'easter moves away from our region, high winds and coastal flooding may persist through Wednesday, the National Weather Service says.

As the Nor’easter moves on, the National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for our area. And a coastal flood advisory.

The warning remains in effect until 2 PM this afternoon for eastern Suffolk County and parts of the Connecticut coast. North winds from 30 to 40 mph are anticipated with gusts up to 65 mph.

“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” the NWS said in an early morning notice. “Widespread power outages are expected. Use caution if you must drive.”

The NWS has also issued a coastal flood advisory from 11 AM to 7 PM Wednesday, with inundation at high tide expected at one-foot above normal levels in vulnerable shoreline areas. Breaking waves may also produce beach erosion.

The storm system brought heavy rain and high winds to our area starting Tuesday morning, and has left hundreds of thousands of customers without power in Massachusetts. As of 8 AM, about 1,600 PSEG customers across Long Island reported power outages.
