Sylvester Manor offers ‘Digging Deeper’ tour with Garden Conservancy

Sylvester Manor and The Garden Conservancy present a tour called “Digging Deeper: Unearthing the Stories of Sylvester Manor.”

Donnamarie Barnes and Sara Gordon — Sylvester Manor’s history & heritage and planning & sustainability directors, respectively — lead the walking tour. It takes place Saturday, July 30, from 10 to 11:30 AM. The cost is $40 per person, and you can buy tickets through The Garden Conservancy’s website, www.gardenconservancy.org.

Barnes and Gordon will describe the challenges inherent in Sylvester Manor’s cultural landscape of great historical significance. And how interpretive and restoration opportunities are weighted with a wealth of archaeological and archival materials, extant and yet to be unearthed, and a dearth of references to those who toiled here.

The tour will include the 2-acre formal garden, believed to date back to the 1650s. Participants will also visit a burial ground of enslaved, indentured, and free people of color, where a study is underway in partnership with indigenous descendants of Long Island’s First Peoples.

The tour will include about a half-mile of walking over uneven ground, so it’s a good idea to wear closed-toe shoes. Sylvester Manor will provide insect repellant.
