SIPD: Officials removed 18 dogs, deemed residence unsafe

Officials removed 18 dogs from a Shelter Island home on Thursday under a court-ordered search warrant, and deemed the residence unsafe, according to a police report.

“The Shelter Island Town Police Department, Town Animal Control, Town Building Inspector, and the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals executed a court ordered Search Warrant of a residence at #26 North Ferry Road,” said the report issued by SIPD Detective Sergeant Jack H. Thilberg.

The dogs were seized around 11 AM under the warrant for violations of Shelter Island Town Code and New York State Agricultural and Market’s Law.

“The Building Inspector determined the residence to be unsafe for entry and placarded the structure not to be occupied,” Thilberg said in a media release. “The seized animals were transported by Town Highway Department to three shelters on Long Island, where the dogs will be examined and treated as needed.”

“The investigation remains active, with assistance from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, The SC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as well as the Shelter Island Town, Town Attorney’s Office,” Thilberg said. “Criminal and other related code violations are anticipated.”
