SICC allows some golf carts

The Shelter Island Country Club allows some golf carts on the 9-hole public course starting May 16. That’ll come as relief to Islanders not up to the challenge hiking the steep slopes at Goat Hill.

The SICC Board of Trustees announced in its newsletter that the club will rent motorized carts to golfers 65 and older and golfers of any age who have a disability that prevents them from walking the course.

“SICC will begin renting carts on Saturday, May 16 following the lead of all four Suffolk County-owned courses and those owned by the towns of Islip, Smithtown and Brookhaven,” the board said. “Seems counties and municipalities and their facilities — including golf courses — are exempt from the governor’s executive order regarding non-essential businesses.”

“Be aware that privately owned carts are also subject to the county’s guidelines.”

Here’s how it should work:

  • Only one person per cart will be allowed, although carts may carry two bags
  • Rental carts will be available only during designated timeframes, weather permitting, when staff is available to disinfect carts before and after use
  • The cart fee is $10 for SICC members/$20 for non members — membership ID and proof of age required
  • Be aware that privately owned carts are also subject to the county’s guidelines

Non-member greens fees are $20; $10 for golfers 18 and younger. All fees are cash only and exact amount is required. A blue honor box is located on the picnic table near the cart fleet for payments.

All other golfers can continue to walk the course in groups no larger than four, practicing social distancing at all times. The flagsticks have been removed, and cups have been raised and placed in the center of all greens for added safety, the club says.
