Shelter Island rescinds its 14-day quarantine

Signs had been posted around town since early April notifying those arriving on Shelter Island that they should self-quarantine for 14 days. The Town rescinded the order Thursday as the Long Island region began Phase One of the state's prescribed reopening process.

The announcement came in the form of a brief news release on Thursday: Shelter Island rescinds its 14-day quarantine.

Word came as the Long Island region moves into Phase One of the state’s prescribed reopening process. In this first phase, manufacturing, construction and agriculture may resume operations (with certain caveats), along with retail for curbside pickup only.

“In light of this transition, the Town of Shelter Island has rescinded its requirement that all new arrivals to Shelter Island quarantine themselves for 14 days,” said the new release from public information officer Jack H. Thilberg, detective sergeant with the Shelter Island Police Department.

The order had been in place since early April, and signs had been posted around Town notifying the public of the request.

Safety message

“Please remain vigilant in proper social distancing practices, which require you to wear a face mask or covering if you are unable to distance yourself at least 6 feet or more away from others,” Thursday’s news release said.

The release also included these safety tips:

“Wash your hands often, use hand sanitizers. Clean and disinfect surfaces frequently, including phones, doorknobs, keyboards, vehicle interior, workspaces, and other areas of possible virus contact.”

“Monitor your health. Be alert for symptoms, check your temperature, and seek medical attention if needed.”

“Those having been exposed to someone with the virus, testing positive themself, or having COVID-19 symptoms, are still required to self-isolate for 14 days, as per CDC guidelines.”

“Do you part, continue to protect yourself, your family and others.”
