Shelter Island 10K postponed

The 41st Shelter Island 10K — a premier road race that typically draws everyday runners from around the region and elite athletes from around the world — will be postponed, Town officials say.

“We’re looking at dates in the fall,” Supervisor Gerry Siller said Wednesday in a phone call after the race organizers spoke with Town officials.

With COVID-19 restrictions still in place for Suffolk County, it would not be possible for Shelter Island to host the crowded event as scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 5:30PM, Siller said.

Shelter Island Police Chief James Read said 10K organizers and the Town would look for a date that is amenable to all.

Organizations across the Island have postponed or cancelled late spring and early summer events, including many major non-profit fundraisers. Some have come up with alternative programs — an option not possible for every entity.
