Sag Harbor Cinema presents ‘The Phantom of the Open’

Sag Harbor Cinema presents “The Phantom of the Open,” the remarkable true story of a crane operator trying out for the 1976 British Open despite having never played a round of golf. It’s the perfect film for golf lovers (and all who love them).

Maurice Flitcroft (portrayed by Mark Rylance) is a crane operator and optimistic dreamer from Barrow-in-Furness. With the support of his family and friends and armed with pluckiness and unwavering self-belief, he pulls off a series of stunning, hilarious, and heartwarming attempts to compete at the highest level of professional golf.

Drawing the ire of the golfing elite, he became a British folk hero in the process.

Craig Roberts directs the 2022 film, written by Simon Farnaby and Scott Murray. In addition to Rylance, the cast includes Sally Hawkins, Rhys Ifans, Simon Farnaby, and Mark Lewis Jones. The runtime is 102 minutes.
