Sag Harbor Cinema hosts a special screening of “Roy’s World: Barry Gifford’s Chicago” featuring a Q&A between the director and Gifford. It’ll be followed by “Wild at Heart,” a David Lynch film inspired by Gifford’s novels.
Rob Christopher directed “Roy’s World” and will speak with Gifford via Zoom after the screening on Sunday, June 12 at 6 PM. Follow this link to buy tickets for “Roy’s World.” The 2020 documentary has a runtime of 75 minutes.
A poet, author, and screenwriter, Gifford has given the world more than 40 works, including the Sailor and Lula novels that inspired Lynch’s “Wild At Heart.”
“Roy’s World: Barry Gifford’s Chicago” features Willem Dafoe, Matt Dillon, and Lili Taylor. It brilliantly brings to life Gifford’s autobiographical collection of stories, capturing a vanished 1950s Chicago through a jazzy, impressionistic combination of beguiling archive footage, animation, and spoken word.
‘Wild at Heart’ screening to follow
Gifford will also introduce the 8 PM screening of “Wild at Heart.” The 1990 film features Dafoe, Nicolas Cage, Laura Dern, Diane Ladd, Harry Dean Stanton, and Isabella Rossellini.
Here’s a synopsis:
Sailor (Cage) and Lula (Dern) struggle to remain together even when fate seems intent on keeping them apart. In this case, fate is Lula’s mother, Marietta Fortune (Ladd). She’s a desperate woman who hates Sailor and will do anything to keep him away from her daughter.
After Sailor is released from prison for murdering a man in self-defense, he and Lula embark on a sex-filled, rocking road trip, aware all the time they’re being hunted by Marietta’s cronies (among them, Dafoe, Stanton, and Rossellini).
