Police blotter for September 21 to 27

Two accidents and one ticket top the Shelter Island police blotter for September 21 to 27, a week marked by at-large-dogs and false alarms.

Accidents and traffic stops

Christopher G. Chobor of Shelter Island reported that on Friday, September 24, around 8:09 AM, he was traveling northbound on North Midway Road near Bowditch Road when a deer ran out, striking his vehicle and causing windshield damage over $1,000.

Noel B. Cunningham of Brooklyn reported on Saturday, September 25, around 11:43 AM, that he was backing out of a parking area at 34 North Menantic Road when he struck a parked, unoccupied vehicle owned by Tom P. Eicas of Fort Myers, FL, causing damage over $1,000.

An officer stopped and ticketed Juan I. Borgogno of Shelter Island on Wednesday, September 22 at 5:40 PM on North Ferry Road for failure to keep right and issued a warning for failure to maintain lane.

In addition, officers issued six other verbal warnings to drivers during traffic stops.

Tuesday, September 21

Officers completed 3rd quarter rifle qualification at the Suffolk County PD range. Officers administered oxygen to an aided case, and a volunteer Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS) provided evaluation and transport to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH).

A Westmoreland caller reporter a dog at large without a collar; the responding Animal Control Officer (ACO) searched for it unsuccessfully.

A cement truck traveling east on Hillside Drive caught and brought down the secondary electric service wires and cable wire to the home at 3 Hillside Drive. There was damage to the electric service located on the consumer-owned utility pole. PSEG put the wire back on the pole and restored power. SIPD notified the homeowner to contact Optimum to restore cable service.

Around 5 PM, a Center caller complained of dogs barking; an ACO contacted the owner, who asked her to put the dogs inside. A caller reported a dispute for informational purposes. The responding officer encouraged the caller to try to work things out but call back if problems persisted.

A passerby found a trailer license plate; SIPD notified the owner. Officers completed 3rd quarter rifle re-qualification at the Suffolk County PD range.

Wednesday, September 22

Police followed up on a 911 hangup call; the person had accidentally pushed the emergency call button numerous times.

Trouble with the passcode caused a caretaker to trigger the burglary alarm at a Hay Beach home. In the Center, a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm sounded, and the Shelter Island Fire Department (SIFD) found high levels of CO coming from a gas stove. SIFD turned off the propane at the tank and aired the house until no CO remained. SIEMS responded and evaluated, but the homeowner refused any further medical assistance.

SIEMS transported an aided case to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital (SB/SH) for evaluation. Then, SIEMS responded to another aided case and transported the person to SB/ELIH.

A caller reported an erratically driven vehicle had pulled into a business parking lot; the responding officer found the vehicle, but it remained parked.

A passerby found a dog and turned it in at SIPD headquarters, where the owner later retrieved it. SIEMS responded to an aided case and transported the person to SB/ELIH for medical attention.

SPID ticketed an SUV for sale parked at the same location for several weeks.

Thursday, September 23

Around 6:45 AM, SIFD responded to an alarm triggered by a bedroom smoke detector; SIFD Chief Anthony Reiter declared no emergency.

A caller reported a property dispute in the Cartwright area for informational purposes. About 1 PM, a smoke alarm called the SIFD to a West Neck location where nothing was amiss. An officer met with school administrators to schedule DARE program lessons for the fall.

An officer noticed a trailer left at Ram Island Town landing and notified the owner to remove it.

A school crosswalk sign fell; an officer notified the Shelter Island Highway Department (SIHD) to make repairs. Around 7 PM, a Center complained about a dirt bike being ridden in the woods; the responding officer canvassed the area but couldn’t find it.

While on patrol, an officer was driving on Brander Parkway when a deer ran out and struck the vehicle causing minor damage. The officer dispatched the injured deer and notified SIHD for removal.

In the Menantic area, a driver reported that a small deer ran into the road striking his vehicle. There was no damage, but the responding officer notified SIHD to remove the dead deer.

SIEMS responded and transported aided to SB/ELIH for medical attention. A caller notified SIPD about an ongoing property dispute. Around 9 PM, SIFD responded to an automated alarm at a Center location; a system malfunction caused this false alarm. Later, a burglary alarm sounded at a Dering Harbor residence; there was no sign of criminal activity.

Friday, September 24

SIEMS responded and transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for further observation. A Hay Beach caller reported a sick raccoon; an ACO captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia.

While on patrol, an officer observed several new painted markings underneath 2nd Bridge. A Menantic caller reported seeing sparks coming from outside the residence and having diminished power inside. The caller had notified an electrician; the responding officer advised a call to PSEG, as well.

An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Menantic area and observed no violations. SIEMS responded to four separate aided cases throughout the day, transporting them to SB/ELIH for further observation.

A Center caller reported that a neighbor had mowed a path across the caller’s property; the responding officer spoke with the neighbor, who said he would stop cutting the trail.

Saturday, September 25

About 12:45 AM, a Center caller reported noise from a loud party; the responding officer spoke with the host, who said he’d turn down the volume.

Bay constables conducted Environmental Conservation Law (ECL) patrols at all Town Landings from Ram Island to Hiberry Lane and found no one fishing at any of the locations. A caller reported her vehicle was disabled in her driveway, and she could not contact AAA; when the responding officer arrived, a neighbor stated he would assist the caller.

In Silver Beach, a caller reported following a deer that appeared to be in distress swimming in West Neck Harbor. The responding officer assisted in hauling the drowned deer ashore and notified SIHD for removal.

A West Neck caller reported a sick raccoon; an ACO captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia. While on patrol in the Center, an officer found a dog at large and returned it to its home.

A Montclair caller reported another dog at large; the owner claimed it before the ACO’s arrival. In response to a complaint on Ram Island, a driver removed an illegally parked vehicle.

A Hay Beach resident called in to override an automated fire alarm activated by smoke from an oven.

Sunday, September 26

An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Center and observed no violations. SIEMS responded and transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for further observation

A caller reported a sailboat aground off Crab Creek; Sea Tow was on the scene. A Center caller notified SIPD about an issue regarding an estate; the responding officer advised the parties to seek proper permission before retrieving any items.

A Cartwright caller reported another dog at large; the owner claimed it before the ACO’s arrival. SIPD assisted a Hay Beach resident inadvertently locked out of her house.

Someone pushed an emergency button at a Hay Beach residence but did not respond when contacted by phone; the responding officer found the person had accidentally activated the button.

Monday, September 27

A Shorewood caller reported losing an item and requested notification if it turned up.

A Center caller reported a dead cat, but the responding ACO found a dead opossum and disposed of it at SIHD. An officer reported for court duty. SIEMS responded to an aided case.

An officer assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle. While on patrol in the Menantic area, an officer dispatched a sick raccoon and disposed of it at SIHD. A caller inadvertently dialed 911.
