Police blotter for September 12 through 18

A ticket for aggravated unlicensed operation tops the Shelter Island police blotter for September 12 through 18.

SIPD stopped Daniel Martineau of Carbondale, CO on Monday, September 12 at 7:50 PM on Manhanset Road for failure to stop at a stop sign. After an investigation, he was also ticketed for aggravated unlicensed operation in the 3rd degree (a misdemeanor).

An officer stopped Vladimir Hurtado Sanchez of Santa Barbara, CA on Sunday, September 18 at 6:08 PM on New York Avenue for speeding 45 miles per hour in a 25-mph zone. SIPD also issued six warnings to drivers during the week.

A bay constable issued a summons to Juan Bautista Jarama Morocho of Elmhurst on Saturday, September 17 at 6:12 PM off Shell Beach Point for keeping undersized weakfish.

Monday, September 12

An officer reported for court duty. Shelter Island Fire Department volunteers responded to a Cartwright caller who reported seeing smoke emanating from a dryer. The responders shut down power to the appliance, which was no longer smoking, and advised the homeowner to contact a repair service.

An officer assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle. A caller reported a car alarm sounding in the IGA parking lot; a dog left in the car somehow activated it. An officer helped to jumpstart a vehicle. Later, an offer drove a driver to her home to retrieve a spare key when she locked herself out of her car.

An officer conducted radar enforcement in the Center resulting in one warning.

Tuesday, September 13

An officer observed no violations during morning radar enforcement in the Menantic area. A caller reported receiving a disturbing phone call that was probably a scam attempt; a woman stated she needed help, but then hung up and couldn’t be reached when the caller and SIPD tried the number.

A Ram Island passerby reported seeing a broken sprinkler head; the responding officer canvassed the area but found nothing amiss. While patrolling the Ram Islands, a passerby stopped an officer to point out a large boulder in the roadway shoulder. The officer reported it to the Highway Department to assess whether to mark it with a sign.

An officer observed no violations during distracted driving enforcement in the Center. A caller reported receiving scam calls from someone claiming to represent the federal government. Officers completed third quarter rife requalification and bay constables completed annual pistol training at the county range in Westhampton. Just before midnight, an officer gave a lift to a person.

Wednesday, September 14

In South Ferry Hills, an animal control officer responded to a report an injured bird; it couldn’t fly or stand and so was transported to a wildlife rehab.

An officer conducting radar enforcement in the Menantic area issued one warning. A Shelter Island bay constable assisted Southold PD in responding to a report of a kayaker passed out and adrift in Southold Bay. The bay constable stayed with the person, who was conscious and alert, while a marine service provider towed the vessel to shore.

A carpenter working at a Center site accidentally dialed 911. A Heights caller reported a suspicious male possibly trespassing; the responding officer advised the caller the person was OK on Heights property. Later, a caller reported that a suspicious male had earlier been walking around a property taking notes; the caller wanted to document the matter.

A person collected an item of property from SIPD. An officer conducting distracted driving enforcement in the Center observed no violations. A caller reported possible illegal activity.

Thursday, September 15

Around 2:37 AM an officer encountered an injured deer along a roadway, dispatched it and notified the Highway Department for removal. A caller turned in items found at Taylor’s Island.

An officer conducting stationary and roaming distracted driving enforcement in the Center observed no violations. Officers performed annual pistol training at the county range in Westhampton. Another distracted driving enforcement resulted in no violations.

In Silver Beach, a caller reported a dog at large; it was on its owner’s property. Around 8:45, officers assisted a caller who’d fallen at home but wasn’t injured.

Friday, September 16

A Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS) and Town Medic responded to an aided case and transported the person to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH). SIPD handled a mental health call.

An automated fire alarm sounded at a Heights location; SIFD volunteers arrived but an employee said it was a false alarm. A caller reported trouble with housemates.

An officer conducting distracted driving enforcement in the Center observed no violations. A marina employee passed along a report from a customer who said a boat was anchored improperly in Coecles Harbor. The employee wasn’t able to locate the boat or make contact with the original caller to get a better description. The responding officer said a bay constable would investigate the following morning.

In the Heights, an employer reported for informational purposes that an employee had been terminated and advised not to return to the site. In the West Neck area, a caller reported that a former employee had returned to the business, creating a disturbance. A Center call said a van was driving in circles in a parking lot; the responding officer canvassed the area with negative results.

An officer assisted a person with a stalled vehicle.

Saturday, September 17

SIFD volunteers responded to a 3:30 AM alarm at a Hay Beach residence; the homeowner said it was a false alarm. Later that morning, a Silver Beach caller said an umbrella had blown away and gotten caught in the home’s power line. The caller got the umbrella down before SIPD arrived.

A Center caller reported minor damage — a faint scratch – on a parked vehicle and asked to document it for informational purposes. A caller reported losing an item of property.

A driver reported hitting a deer while traveling southbound on Brander Parkway causing damage estimated at more than $1,000 (details in next week’s blotter). An officer conducting radar enforcement in the Heights observed no violations.

A Center caller reported a dog at large; it was gone when the ACO arrived. Later, a Center caller reported a dog at large; the ACO determined the dog was on its owner’s property.

In two instances, SIEMS transported aided cases to SB/ELIH. A West Neck caller reported possible petit larceny.

In Silver Beach, an officer conducted an Environmental Conservation Law (ECL) check and issued a ticket (see details above) to one person for keeping weakfish less than 16 inches.

That evening, a Center caller, home alone with two children, reported hearing noises on her back deck. The responding office found several deer and opossum nearby but observed no criminal activity.

Sunday, September 18

An officer responded to a 1:46 AM panic alarm at a Cartwright residence; it was a false alarm and the homeowner agreed to contact the system provider in the morning.

An officer conducted an ECL check at Reel Point were six people were fishing and found no violations. A Ram Island caller reported a skiff possibly having trouble off the first causeway; by the time SIPD arrived, the boat was safely ashore.

In the West Neck area, around 4:14 PM, a caller reported a boat operator was playing music loudly; a bay constable spoke with the operator, who shut off the music and left the area. A Menantic caller complained of loud music from the Shipwreck Bar around 7 PM; the responding officer went to the caller’s residence but heard no music.

SIEMS responded to an aided case; the person refused medical treatment.
