Police blotter for October 3 through 9

An accident that pushed an unoccupied boat against a Dering Harbor dock tops the police blotter for October 3 through 9.

According to the accident report, a 42-foot sailboat named Valcor II and owned by Andrew Marks of Shelter Island, slipped its mooring in foul weather. As a result, it drifted into a Piccozzi’s Marina dock, causing damage to the sailboat and three other vessels over $1,000.

Later, a Boston whaler that went missing from a mooring in the harbor that same day was found.

Traffic stops

SIPD stopped and ticketed drivers as follows:

  • Theresa M. Julian-Lantiere of Sag Harbor on Tuesday, October 4 at 4:52 PM on South Ferry Road for operating a vehicle while using a portable electronic device
  • Marisa Cardinale of Peconic on Saturday, October 8 at 5:22 PM on New York Avenue for speeding 40 mph in a 25-mph zone

SIPD also issued seven warnings to drivers during traffic stops and two parking tickets.

Monday, October 3

An officer conducted a security walk-through at the school and found the building secure. In the early afternoon, an officer performing distracted driving enforcement at two Center locations observed no violations.

A Center caller notified SIPD of two vehicles parked without permission; the owner agreed to remove them. A Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS) transported an aided case to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH).

An officer performing distracted driving enforcement in the Center in the early evening observed no violations. SIPD deployed a cone to mark a low-hanging Optimum cable over a Hay Beach roadway pending repairs.

Tuesday, October 4

Along Midway Road, an officer deployed a cone and caution tape to mark a low-hanging Optimum cable pending repairs.

An officer performing radar enforcement in the Center observed no violations. An automated burglary alarm went off at an unoccupied Center residence; SIPD found the place secure and notified the caretaker to follow up.

SIEMS and a Stony Brook paramedic responded to an aided case and transported the patient to SB/ELIH. A person making a delivery to a West Neck residence notified SIPD of an open door; the responding officer found no sign of criminal activity, secured the door, and left a voicemail for the homeowner.

Wednesday, October 5

An officer assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle. In Silver Beach, one dog bit another, and the bitten dog required medical treatment; the other dog’s owner agreed to pay.

A burglary alarm sounded at a Shorewood home during a storm. SIPD found the home secure and advised the owner a power blip likely tripped the alarm due to lightning.

A Shorewood caller requested assistance keeping contractors working on a project next door off her property. An officer spoke with the contractor, who agreed to comply. An officer assisted a resident who fell while entering a vehicle but wasn’t injured and followed up to help the person upon arrival at home.

A burglary alarm sounded at a Hay Beach residence; SIPD found the home secure and notified the caretaker. An officer provided a jump start for a vehicle with a dead battery. SIPD informed Optimum about a dangling cable.

An officer deployed cones to warn drivers of flooding on a Ram Island roadway. SIPD assisted a person with filing a lost license plate form.

Thursday, October 6

A Center caller reported that she heard a noise outside her window the night before and found a screen window was damaged. An officer investigated and found a deer possibly caused the noise and damage.

An officer performed afternoon school crossing duty. SIPD disposed of firearms in keeping with department policy. An officer conducting distracted driving enforcement in the Center observed no violations. SIEMS responded to an aided case; the person refused medical attention.

Friday, October 7

A Menantic caller reported a malfunctioning smoke detector; the responding officer disconnected it pending repairs.

An officer performed morning and afternoon school crossing duty. In responding to an open 911 call, SIPD determined there was no emergency.

A person handed over to an animal control officer (ACO) two dogs found at large in Mashomack Preserve. The ACO located the owner, who picked them up.

A system malfunction caused a Heights fire alarm to sound. An officer conducting distracted driving enforcement in the Center observed no violations.

Around 7 PM, a Ram Island caller reported a large fire in a neighbor’s yard; the responding officer found homeowners tending a small campfire. A passerby reported an injured raccoon on a West Neck roadway; it ran away when the ACO approached.

In the Heights, a caller reported people fishing from private property; when SIPD arrived, the four people left the area without incident. A passerby reported an injured deer on a Center roadway; the responding officer dispatched it and arranged for the Highway Department to remove it.

Saturday, October 8

An anonymous caller reported two dogs loose in South Ferry roadway; an officer canvassed the area with negative results. A Ram Island caller reported that someone removed political campaign signs along roadsides.

An officer conducting radar enforcement in the Heights issued one verbal warning and one ticket.

A caller reported numerous vehicles in a no-parking zone on a Ram Island roadway. The responding officer requested the band playing at a Ram’s Head Inn event announce that drivers should remove them. Later, the officer ticketed the two remaining vehicles and deployed cones for safety.

SIPD conducted a well-being check; the person had felt ill earlier but was OK now and refused medical attention. A Menantic caller reported a neighbor’s chimenea was too close to a tree and presented a possible fire hazard.

Two people who got lost after sunset in Mashomack Preserve called for help; SIPD and Mashomack staff found them on Foxen Creek Road and escorted them back to their vehicle in the parking lot.

SIPD was investigating a possible financial crime.

Sunday, October 9

Around 1 AM, a Center caller said loud music was causing a disturbance; the responding officer found noise nearby resulting from a person power-washing a vehicle.

At 8:28 AM, SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/ELIH. About 20 minutes later, SIEMS transported another aided case to SB/ELIH.

A Menantic caller told SIPD that a person may have entered her house on Wednesday; she wasn’t requesting a police investigation but only wanted to document the event.

In Silver Beach, an ACO responded when a caller complained that a larger dog had attacked her smaller dog. The ACO spoke with both parties and found the smaller dog wasn’t injured, and the other dog owner understood she must leash her pet.

SIEMS transported an aided case to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. A Ram Island caller reported a hawk in distress; the responding ACO found it was a healthy bird.

A West Neck caller reported a vehicle driving erratically and said there was an ongoing issue of speeding in the area. The responding officer said SIPD would conduct extra patrols.

An officer performing distracted driving enforcement in the Center observed no violations. A passerby reported a vehicle dragging its back bumper in the South Ferry area; an officer canvassed the area with negative results.
