Police blotter for November 2 to 8

Three traffic tickets top the Shelter Island police blotter for November 2 to 8, a week marked by injured deer and sick raccoons requiring humane dispatch.

Traffic stops

Officers stopped and issued tickets to these drivers as follows:

  • Libia M. Guichay-Gutama of Hampton Bays on Thursday, November 4 around 12:30 PM on South Ferry Road for failure to stop a yield sign when required and being an unlicensed operator
  • Isabella G. Quattrone of Manlius, NY on Sunday, November 7 around 8:24 PM on North Ferry Road for speed not reasonable and prudent (and a verbal stop sign warning)

In addition, officers issued six warnings to drivers during traffic stops.

Note: This post is based on information provided by the Shelter Island Police Department. Those named have not been convicted of a crime, and charges against them may be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found not guilty.

Tuesday, November 2

A Heights caller reported a sick raccoon; an Animal Control Officer (ACO) captured it and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia.

A Heights business turned in bicycles and a scooter left on the property for some weeks; an officer logged them to the storage container.

An officer conducted stationary and roaming distracted driving enforcement in the Center and observed no violations. Around 3:30 PM, a smoke alarm activated at a Ram Island location; the owner said a plumber soldering set it off.

Wednesday, November 3

A woman accidentally dialed 911. A volunteer Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS) transported an aided cast to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH) for further observation.

A Center caller reported a sick raccoon; an ACO captured it and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia.

An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Menantic area and issued one verbal warning to a driver. At the Shelter Island School, an officer provided students in the 5th grade with a DARE lesson.

SIPD assisted a person with removing property.

Thursday, November 4

An officer conducted radar enforcement in the West Neck area and observed no violations. A Harbor View caller reported a sick raccoon; an ACO captured it and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia.

A Shelter Island Highway Department (SIHD) employee found a small bag containing various calibers of live shotgun shells in the Goody Pile area.

The SIPD Detective/Sergeant reviewed, completed, and submitted monthly validation reports to the state’s eJustice program.

A center caller reported a dog missing from its yard; it returned before ACO’s arrival. A passerby reported an injured deer in the West Neck area; the deer was gone when police arrived.

Around 6:15 PM, a West Neck caller reported hunters on private property.

Friday, November 5

An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Center and issued one warning to a driver.

The SIPD Det/Sgt conducted audits of the agency’s warrants and orders of protection files.

A Longview caller reported an audible alarm coming from her basement. The Shelter Island Fire Department (SIFD) determined the sound was coming from a malfunctioning plumbing fixture within the heating system. The homeowner called a repair service.

A fire alarm sounded at a Winthrop Road property. The SIFD responded and found smoke in the kitchen caused by a problem with the stovetop. An aided case refused medical attention.

After a month’s absence, a Ram Island resident arrived home to find the house reeking of propane. The SIFD responded, found the propane tank was empty, and cleared the remaining gas from the home, pending a safety check by the propane provider.

A caller concerned about his mother requested a well-being check; she’d been out with friends. SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for further medical attention.

Saturday, November 6

An officer conducted radar enforcement in the Cartwright area and observed no violations. A Heights caller reported a sick raccoon; an ACO responded but couldn’t find the animal.

A Menantic caller reported a missing paddleboard last seen about two weeks ago. A caller reported to police for informational purposes only regarding an incident.

A passerby reported an open utility hole in the Center, creating a hazard; the responding officer replaced the cover.

Around 5:30 PM, food burning in an oven triggered an alarm in the Cartwright area; the SIFD responded, but there was no emergency. The manager of a Heights business inadvertently tripped a burglary alarm.

Dogs barking in the Center around 10 PM prompted a complaint; the responding officer found the source of barking and spoke with the dog’s owner.

Sunday, November 7

On the day’s first call, an officer dispatched an injured deer and notified SIHD for removal.

Southampton Police notified Shelter Island Police of a 911 hangup call from the South Ferry Hills area. The caller had inadvertently dialed the phone.

In an Island bar, a mistake in setting a fireplace damper caused smoke to back up and set off the fire alarm. SIEMS responded to an aided case; the person did not require EMS transport.

For a second time in the same day, an officer dispatched an injured deer and notified SIHD for removal.

Monday, November 8

An officer performed court duty. At the Shelter Island School, students in the 5th grade had a DARE lesson.

A caller reported a set of car keys missing. Another caller reported being the victim of a Coinbase scam.

SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for further medical attention.
