Police blotter for March 14 to 20, 2022

Six traffic tickets top the Shelter Island police blotter for March 14 to 20, a quiet week punctuated by false alarms.

Officers stopped and ticketed these drivers as follows:

  • Benigno R. Lopez-Cardenas of Mastic Beach on Wednesday, March 16 around 4:23 PM on North Ferry Road for operating a vehicle while using a portable electronic device
  • Mason M. Marcello of Shelter Island on Wednesday, March 16 around 5:57 PM on North Fery Road for no seat belt and operating out of class
  • Fausto R. Leon Alvarracin of East Hampton on Friday, March 18 around 8:38 AM on North Cartwright Road for speeding 49 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone
  • Kevin A. Gomez of Greenport on Saturday, March 19 around 6:56 PM on Cedar Avenue for nontransparent side wings/side windows and being an unlicensed operator

Officers issued 13 warnings to drivers during traffic stops.

Note: This post is based on information provided by the Shelter Island Police Department. Those named have not been convicted of a crime, and charges against them may be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found not guilty.

Monday, March 14

An officer completed Court Duty. A volunteer Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS) responded to an aided case. A caller reported that an individual was making inappropriate comments; the responding officer spoke with the person who agreed to refrain from talking.

SIPD delivered an order of protection. A resident fell and activated a medical alert pendant; a neighbor was on-site when the responding officer arrived. No medical attention was required.

A Center caller reported a sick raccoon; an animal control officer (ACO) captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia. An officer attempted to deliver an order of protection, but the person reported had left the Island with no plans to return.

SIPD returned an item to its owner that had been consigned to the police for safekeeping in 2018. An officer assisted a person who was locked out of his house.

Tuesday, March 15

SIEMS transported an aided case to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH) for further medical attention. A caller reported placing personal documents by mistake at the Town Recycling Center; the responding officer checked with Town employees, who said the items had likely gone into the compactor and been disposed of.

An officer assisted a Hay Beach resident with locating a beeping smoke/CO detector. A person who fell at home but wasn’t injured was assisted by SIPD.

Wednesday, March 16

An officer and the SIPD detective/sergeant took part in active shooter training at the East Hampton Town Police Department.

An employee contacted SIPD to report a person acting erratically; the responding officer explained to the person they were not permitted to enter the location and would be subject to arrest for trespass. After the person left the premises, the complainant signed a trespass affidavit.

A passerby reported an alarm sounded at a Westmoreland residence; the responding officer found a door alarm with a low battery, disconnected it, and reported the problem to the owner via voicemail.

A Silver Beach caller reported a possible kayaker in distress; the responding officer found no emergency. Volunteers from the Shelter Island Fire Department responded to a Center alarm; a system malfunction caused it.

Thursday, March 17

Around 2 AM, SIPD provided notification to a funeral home after death occurred. An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Center and observed no violations.

An officer conducted a well-being check that first was routed to NYC police, then Suffolk County police; there was no emergency. A nurse at SB/ELIH reported treating a person for a dog bite; the individual told SIPD it was his own dog that bit him on the forearm; an ACO was assigned to follow up.

Just before 9 PM, a Center caller reported noise from a nearby business; the responding officer found the business was secure with no sign of criminal activity and notified the business owner, who confirmed all was OK.

Friday, March 18

An officer conducted radar enforcement in the Cartwright area and issued one ticket (see details above). SIPD assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle. SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for further observation.

While on patrol, an officer observed a loud alarm from a Menantic residence and was able to silence it at the owner’s request.

A Center caller reported someone burning leaves in violation of Town Code; the responding officer told the property owner he could burn leaves only between September 15 and March 15 with a permit. A passerby reported a toppled stop sign at Strawberry Lane and Baldwin Road; SIPD notified the Highway Department for repairs.

Officers completed first quarter rifle re-qualification at Westhampton.

Saturday, March 19

Around 5:20 AM, SIEM transported an aided cast to SB/ELIH with the support of an on-call North Ferry crew. A homeowner accidentally set off the residence’s burglary alarm.

A West Neck caller reported hearing a high-pitched whistling sound; the responding officer found it was due to a Piccozzi Fuel Oil Co. crew filling a nearby oil tank.

A Heights caller reported an item missing from his car but later called back to say he’d located the item.

Sunday, March 20

An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in various locations in the Center and observed no violations during a period of low traffic.

SIEMS transported an aided case to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. A West Neck resident inadvertently set off a smoke alarm while cooking and sent away SIFD volunteers who responded.

A Menantic caller reported a dog at large; the ACO and dog owner, who’d been searching for the pet, arrived on the scene simultaneously.
