Police blotter for June 6 to 12

Six accidents, including a deer vs motorcycle crash that resulted in injuries, top the Shelter Island police blotter for June 6 to 12.

On Saturday, June 11, Ian J. Heyman of Colonial Heights, VA said he was traveling southbound on North Cartwright Road on a motorcycle around 10:11 PM when a deer ran out, striking the bike, and causing Heyman to lose control and slide for about 136 feet. A volunteer Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS) transported him to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Brian Cass of Shelter Island reported that on Monday, June 6, around 9:47 AM he was exiting the gravel parking area behind the South Ferry building when he hit a wooden fence post. The damage estimate exceeds $1,000.

On Thursday, June 9 around 9:24 PM Annabella V. Springer of Shelter Island reported she was attempting to parallel park a vehicle owned by Brad Kitkowski outside his Isola restaurant on Grand Avenue when she sideswiped a parked unoccupied vehicle owned by EAN Holdings LLC of Tulsa, OK causing in excess of $1,000 in damages.

Elizabeth G. Robbins of Sag Harbor said she had stopped at North Ferry Road at the intersection with Manwaring on Saturday, June 11 around 3:27 PM, but failed to yield to a vehicle driven by Karen E. Robert of Bronxville heading eastbound on North Ferry Road (where there is no stop sign). In Robert’s car, the passenger door airbag was deployed, and the passenger sustained a minor abrasion. SIPD estimated damage was greater than $1,000.

On Sunday, June 12, Angel M. Naulanarvaez of Ridgewood was driving a vehicle owned by Eric A. Jimbo of Glendale and traveling northbound on Clinton Avenue around 11 AM when he fell asleep at the wheel and rear-ended a vehicle driven by Jason E. Shubert of Huntington, causing damage to both vehicles in excess of $1,000. No one was injured.

An officer on patrol on Sunday, June 12 around 10:24 PM reported striking a deer on South Cartwright Road; the apparently injured deer ran off. There was no damage to the vehicle.

Tickets and traffic stops

Officers stopped and ticketed these drivers as follows:

  • Rudy N. Lopez Gonzales of Shelter Island on Tuesday, June 7 around 1:46 PM on North Ferry Road for speeding 55 miles per hour in a 40-mph zone, and operating out of class
  • Klever E. Avila Bermeo of East Hampton on Wednesday, June 8 around 6:47 AM on North Cartwright Road for speeding 48 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone
  • Roberto C. Grammatica of Shelter Island on Thursday, June 9 around 4:54 PM on North Menantic Road for speeding 49 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone
  • Joseph P. Kuhlmann of Cutchogue on Friday, June 10 around 8:23 PM on North Ferry Road for no distinctive plate/insecure/dirty
  • Ladislav Smigura of East Hampton on Saturday, June 11 around 8:42 PM on West Neck Road for failure to stop at a stop sign
  • Dana R. Foster of Shelter Island on Saturday, June 11 around 9:26 PM on Smith Street for driving an uninspected and unregistered motor vehicle
  • James P. Seward of Oakland, CA, on Sunday, June 12 around 8:44 PM on Grand Avenue for driving in the wrong direction on a one-way street

Officers issued 25 verbal warnings to drivers during traffic stops. Traffic Control Officers issued 7 parking tickets.

On the water, bay constables issued verbal warnings to two boaters for unreasonable speed and one to a boater for carrying a passenger under 12 who was not wearing a personal floatation device.

Monday, June 6

Around 8:30 AM, a pool service worker inadvertently tripped the alarm at a Westmoreland residence. An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Center and observed no violations. SIEMS transported an aided case for med-evac by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital.

Officers took part in a marine training exercise. A caller reported a landlord/tenant dispute; the responding officer advised the matter was civil in nature and that the caller should consult an attorney.

A Silver Beach caller complained that his boat with a valid storage permit had been moved without permission. SIPD located the woman who moved the boat, who said she’d done so to make room for a meeting at the site. An officer performed school crossing duty.

SIEMS transported an aided case to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. Around 8:40 PM, a West Neck caller complained about noise from mowing on the public golf course. The responding officer assessed the noise and notified the caller that it was reasonable. The SIPD Detective/Sergeant completed an eJustice audit.

Tuesday, June 7

Around 1:26 AM, SIPD responded to a commercial alarm at a Center property; the building was secure with no sign of criminal activity. Later that morning, an animal control officer (ACO) removed a snapping turtle stuck on a Center porch and relocated it to a nearby pond.

An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Center and issued one verbal warning. Later, an officer conducted radar enforcement in the Center and observed no violations.

An ACO patrolled Town beaches (where dogs are NOT allowed from Memorial Day through Labor Day — leased or unleashed) and found no dogs on Crescent or Wades. Officers participated in a marine training exercise.

A Center caller reported a dog at large; the responding ACO recognized the dog and called the owner to collect it. A couple of hours later, another dog was reported at large; the ACO couldn’t find it.

In the Center, a passerby reported a downed wire; the responding officer found it was a telephone wire, moved it from the roadway, and reported the problem to Verizon.

Around 8:43 PM, an alarm sounded at the Shelter Island Heights Pharmacy; the responding officer found the building secure with no sign of criminal activity.

Wednesday, June 8

A power failure overnight activated an alarm at a commercial building in the Center. An officer assisted with DARE graduation prep at the school.

An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement at Midway Road in the Center and observed no violations. A Silver Beach caller reported a shark on the beach; the responding ACO retrieved the dead animal and tossed it farther out into the water.

The Det/Sgt submitted information requested from law enforcement agencies for a national sex trafficking study by the University of New Hampshire. While on patrol, an ACO found no dogs on Crescent Beach but issued a verbal warning to a dog owner at Wades Beach.

A South Ferry Hills caller reported hearing a fire alarm; volunteers from the Shelter Island Fire Department (SIFD) walked through the residence and deemed the call a false alarm.

In the Center, SIFD responded to another alarm triggered by a smoke detector and confirmed there was no emergency. An officer patrolled Crescent Beach on foot. A resident and caretaker testing a medical device accidentally set it off, prompting a request for a well-being check.

Thursday, June 9

SIPD notified PSEG for repairs after a caller reported a tree limb dangling on wires and partially blocking a Silver Beach road. An officer tracked a 911 open line to a Center worker who was unaware his phone had made a call.

A bay constable rescued a dog in distress about 300 yards off Paradise Point in Southold Bay, returning it to its owner on shore. A caller reported losing a state ID card.

In West Neck, a passerby reported a bicyclist possibly needing help; the responding officer found the cyclist, who pushing his bike, was fine. An ACO checking for dogs on beaches issued a verbal warning to a dog owner at Crescent Beach.

A Menantic caller reported a turtle stuck in a basement stairwell; the responding ACO found it was a diamondback terrapin and relocated it to nearby brackish water.

SIPD assisted a caller whose home security camera system was disabled; an officer checked the home and saw no sign of criminal activity. In Silver Beach, a caller reported an injured turtle; an ACO transported it to Turtle Rescue for rehabilitation.

An officer provided a jumpstart for a moped with a dead battery. Just before midnight, SIPD handled a call about an emotionally disturbed person.

Friday, June 10

A burglary alarm sounded at a Ram Island residence; the responding officer determined the home was secure with no sign of criminal activity. A caller reported that the driver of a pickup truck failed to pay a North Ferry fare; an officer found the truck driver looking for a place to park near the ferry terminal to make the payment.

A caller reported losing a trailer license plate. A Menantic caller reported an unknown vessel tied up at a private mooring; the boat was gone when the bay constable arrived.

Later, a bay constable escorted kayakers struggling to return to Fanning Point. An ACO checked the Town beaches and found no dogs. Around 4:34 PM, a bay constable directed the operators of two boats to relocate to the proper anchorage in West Neck Harbor.

An officer assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle. A Heights caller reported a dog at large; the responding ACO searched without success. A caller reported finding a child left unattended at a Center location. The responding officer reunited the child with a family member, who had dropped her off believing there was an event for children taking place.

A fire on a West Neck utility pole burned itself out as the SIFD arrived; PSEG responded for repairs.

Saturday, June 11

An officer conducted a foot patrol in the Heights. In the Center, a caller reported a dog at large; an ACO captured the dog and returned her home.

A passerby found an iPhone in the Heights and turned it in at the police station; SIPD notified the owner. An officer conducted Environmental Conservation Law (ECL) checks at Big Ram Island where 12 people were fishing and observed no violations. A Menantic caller reported an injured rabbit; the responding ACO took it to a wildlife rehabilitator for treatment.

A Menantic caller reported a dog at large; the owner showed up to collect the dog just as the ACO arrived. SIEMS transported an aided case to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH).

A bay constable assisted a boat operator who’d run aground just west of buoy #12 off Paradise Point; Sea Tow was en route. A Center caller reported a possible suspicious person asking about parking in the school lot for an interview; the responding officer confirmed that the school was conducting job interviews.

An ACO checked Town beaches for dogs and issued one verbal warning to a dog owner at Wades Beach.

A bay constable advised operators of two boats to move to the appropriate anchorage in West Neck Harbor. A Menantic caller reported a rabbit stuck in a window well; the responding ACO relocated the animal to safety.

Around 8 PM, a Menantic caller complained of loud music from The Shipwreck Bar; the responding officer went to the caller’s location and to another nearby and could not hear the music. The bar owner said the music was due to end soon.

A Heights caller reported loud music coming from a beach around 10:26 PM; the responding officer canvassed the area and found the sound to be barely audible from several locations in the Heights.

Sunday, June 12

A bay constable conducted ECL checks at beaches around the Island and found all who were fishing at various locations were in compliance with applicable laws. (Same for the ECL checks later in the day.)

A caller reported receiving two voicemails from an unknown person on her work phone. An officer assisted a driver who was locked out of a vehicle.

An ACO patrolling the Town beaches issued a verbal warning to a person with two dogs on Wades Beach. SIPD was investigating a complaint about a suspicious vehicle.

SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/ELIH.
