Police blotter for January 3 to 9, 2022

A Silver Beach accident resulting in a minor injury and two accidents involving snow plows during Friday’s storm top the Shelter Island police blotter for January 3 to 9, 2022.

Brian G. Raab of East Hampton reported on Thursday, January 6, around 11:59 AM, that he was driving southbound on Brander Parkway when Suzann T. Castello failed to yield at Sudee Glen. As a result, his vehicle struck the rear quarter panel of her vehicle, causing damage over $1,000.

Raab suffered minor back pain. A volunteer Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS) transported him to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH) for evaluation.

An officer issued a ticket to Castello for failure to yield right-of-way at a stop sign.

During Friday’s snowstorm, around 6:45 AM, Brett T. Page of Shelter Island was in a Town snowplow turning around in the Highway Department parking lot when he struck a parked, unoccupied vehicle owned by Ronald E. Anderson of Shelter Island. The damage estimate exceeds $1,000.

Around 9:59 the same day, Walter W. Richards of Shelter Island reported he was plowing the parking lot at 45 North Ferry Road when Neville G. Atkins of Shelter Island parked behind him in a blind spot. Richards said he backed into Atkins’ vehicle. Atkins said he was exiting the vehicle at the time and fell to the ground but was not injured. The damage estimate exceeds $1,000.

Monday, January 3

Around 3:12 AM, SIEMS responded and transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for observation.

About 90 minutes later, SIEMS responded and transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for further medical attention.

An officer conducted radar enforcement in the Center and observed no violations. The caretaker at a Cartwright residence accidentally set off the burglary alarm. An officer followed up on a previous Hay Beach incident.

Tuesday, January 4

An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Center and observed no violations. Later, an officer conducting distracted driving enforcement issued a warning to a driver.

SIEMS responded and transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for further evaluation.

In Dering Harbor, a caller reported hunters too close to his property. An officer responded and found the hunter was permitted to hunt and at a sufficient distance from the caller’s home.

Wednesday, January 5

SIEMS responded and transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for further medical attention. A burglary alarm sounded at a Center residence; the responding officer found the property secure and notified the caretaker.

A passerby in the Center reported a broken water pipe at a neighbor’s home; SIPD notified the caretaker. A Hay Beach resident complained that a neighbor’s exterior lights violate Town Code; SIPD notified the Building Department to follow up.

An officer conducted radar enforcement in the Heights. A caller reported someone driving erratically on 114 heading for the North Ferry; officers canvassed the area but didn’t find the vehicle.

A broken pipe on a neighbor’s dock prompted a call from a Menantic resident; SIPD reached the owner, who arranged to have the water shut off. A Center caller reported a dead turkey; the responding officer notified the Shelter Island Highway Department for removal.

In Westmoreland, a caller reported a sick raccoon; an Animal Control Officer (ACO) captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia. SIEMS responded to an aided case; the person refused medical attention.

Shortly after 11 PM, a Center caller asked SIPD to check the area around his home after someone knocked on the door and then ran away. Officers checked the site with negative results.

Thursday, January 6

A West Neck caller reported a sick raccoon; an ACO captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia. Shortly after, a South Ferry Hills caller reported another sick raccoon; the ACO captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia.

An officer issued a warning to a driver during a Heights traffic stop.

The caretaker at a Center residence inadvertently tripped the burglary alarm. At a Dering Harbor residence, an open door tripped a burglary alarm; the caretaker said it sometimes didn’t close securely and blew open.

A person working at a Ram Island residence accidentally activated a carbon monoxide detector. Twice that evening, officers provided lift assists for people who needed help at home but weren’t injured.

SIPD assured a Center caller that patrols would continue in where she reported a speeding truck. Officers followed up on a prior domestic incident.

Friday, January 7

As snow falling overnight began to pile up, officers notified the Town, Heights, and Village of Dering Harbor highway departments of hazardous road conditions.

An officer escorted a funeral procession to Our Lady of the Isle Cemetery. SIPD provided an escort to a person due to snow-covered roads and dangerous conditions.

SIEMS responded and transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for further medical attention. A caller reported a speeding driver who failed to stop at two stops signs; the responding officer pulled the driver over and issued verbal warnings, noting had the violations been committed in police presence, he could’ve received several summonses.

A Westmoreland caller reported two dogs at large; the responding ACO could not find them. A downed tree blocked a Dering Harbor roadway; the village highway department removed it.

Another false CO alarm was activated when a Ram Island homeowner attempted to change the device batteries.

Saturday, January 8

Shortly after midnight, an alarm sounded at a Center residence; SIPD found the place secure with no sign of criminal activity and notified the homeowner.

Around 1 AM, an officer administered oxygen to an aided case until SIEMS responded and transported the person to SB/ELIH.

Later that morning, an officer escorted a funeral procession to St Mary’s Episcopal Church. A faulty sensor on a basement window at a Harbor View home tripped a burglary alarm; there was no emergency.

A caller reported an aided case; to minimize possible exposure to infection, SIPD and EMS advised the aided case to have the caller drive her to the hospital.

Sunday, January 9

A Shorewood caller reported a sick raccoon; an ACO captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia.
