Police blotter for January 10 to 17

A fender bender in an auto repair parking lot and three tickets top the Shelter Island police blotter for January 10 to 17, a cold week with high-tide flooding that impeded traffic.

Laura A. Marcello of Shelter Island reported that on Wednesday, January 12 around 4:30 PM while turning around in the parking lot at Hubbard’s Garage, she hit the lowered tailgate of a parked, unoccupied vehicle owned by Ronald S. Jernick of Shelter Island. The damage estimate is over $1,000 for both vehicles. She called the report in after arriving home, having not realized the extent of the damage at the time of the incident.

Officers stopped and ticketed these drivers as follows:

  • Lucina E. Aurichio of Greenport on Monday, January 10 around 2:13 PM on New York Avenue for speeding 43 miles per hour in a 25-mph zone
  • Ana J. Rodriguez-Parmigiani of Amityville on Wednesday, January 12 around 10:19 AM on New York Avenue for speeding 43 miles per hour in a 25-mph zone
  • Nabil B. Bahi of East Hampton on Friday, January 14 around 2:39 PM on North Ferry Road for towing an unregistered trailer

Officers issued three warnings to drivers in other traffic stops.

Monday, January 10

An officer performed court duty. A Center caller reported that several packages addressed to her ended up on someone else’s porch.

A Ram Island caller reported two sick raccoons. The responding animal control officer (ACO) found one was dead; the other ran out of the basement. The ACO advised the homeowner to secure the basement to keep animals out in the future.

A woman stopped at SIPD HQ to say her mother was receiving unwanted messages; the responding officer notified the caller to stop.

Tuesday, January 11

An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Center but left briefly to patrol in the Heights. No violations were observed.

A Center caller request SIPD assistance in managing a transaction relating to a civil harassment complaint. Officers took part in a virtual training program with the Southold Police Department and Family Services League (DASH) of Suffolk County.

An officer completed quarterly reports for evidence kits.

Wednesday, January 12

Around 1 AM, a fire alarm sounded at a Westmoreland. The volunteer Shelter Island Fire Department (SIFD) responded, but found no emergency. SIPD was unable until later that morning to track down contact information for a caretaker in order to shut off the system.

A caller reported a truck with a trailer partly blocking traffic in the North Ferry line; the responding officer issued a verbal warning to the driver, who relocated the vehicle.

An officer assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle. Freezing temperatures caused a pipe in a Longview outdoor shower to burst; a passerby reported it to police and an officer shut off the water.

Around 11:30 PM, a Center caller reported that a dog had been barking for five hours; the responding officer advised the owner to bring the dog in for the night.

Thursday, January 13

Around 2:15 AM, a volunteer Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS), with the support of an on-call South Ferry crew, transported an aided case to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital (SB/SH) for medical attention.

An officer assisted a person who required help in her home but was not injured.

SIEMS transported an aided case to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH) for further medical assistance. An officer placed cones around a hazard blocking a lane on a Heights roadway.

A caller reported finding two dogs in the Tarkettle area; the responding ACO traced the owner via one dog’s microchip.

Friday, January 14

Around 6 AM, a Montclair caller reported loud noise coming from a house; the responding officer found the source was a chimney exhaust vent. SIEMS responded and transported an aided case to SB/ELIH.

A caller reported that the sound of gunshots was recorded by a webcam at her Hay Beach home at an earlier time; an officer advised her to contact SIPD immediately if she heard the sound again.

An officer assisted a person who had the wrong key and couldn’t get into her residence. In the Center, a passerby reported erratic driving; the responding officer was unable to locate the vehicle.

Around 4:20 PM, the North Ferry line backed up and an officer assisted with traffic control. SIEMS responded to an aided case but no transport was required.

Saturday, January 15

Strong winds toppled a stop sign in the Center; SIPD notified the Town Highway Department for repairs. An officer assisted a person who had fallen at home but wasn’t injured.

SIPD and SIFD responded when the caretaker of Ram Island residence smelled noxious exhaust throughout the home. Firefighters used fans to clear the air. SIFD Chief Anthony Reiter said the smoke was due to a faulty oil burner, and the caretaker arranged for repairs.

SIPD was investigating a report of a broken light on the back of the Hay Beach home that earlier this month was reported for a possible violation of the Town’s outdoor lighting code. Later, officers investigated a non-violent domestic dispute.

SPID was called to a home where a person died; the officer assisted the family with notifying the funeral home.

Sunday, January 16

In Dering Harbor, a caller reported complaints about a tenant. A caller requested held with a disabled vehicle; the responding officer followed the person to the repair shop.

A caller reported a sick raccoon at Reel Point; an animal control officer captured it and brought it to a vet for humane euthanasia. A vehicle reported possibly missing was found safe in its Dering Harbor garage.

SIPD began a confidential drugs investigation. A Shorewood caller reported that a dog had attacked and injured a deer; an ACO responded but found no dog or deer. An officer assisted a person who fell at home but was not injured.

Monday, January 17

Police responded to a burglary alarm at a Menantic home; a worker there had accidentally activated it. In stormy weather, an officer on patrol encountered downed trees in Hay Beach and notified the Highway Department for removal.

An officer reported flooding on a Ram Island roadway due to extreme high tide; the Highway Department placed a barricade to warn away motorists. Flooding shut down Bridge Street until the tide receded, and impeded traffic on low-lying areas of West Neck Road.

A Dering Harbor resident requested assistance in an ongoing dispute with a tenant.
In the Center, a caller reported someone inquired about renting a cottage and then began moving in without permission. SIPD canvassed the area but couldn’t find the person.

Around 11:30 PM, a caller requested a well-being check; SIPD found the person was safe at home, but not answering calls while trying to sleep.
