Police blotter for February 28 to March 6

An arrest on a misdemeanor charge of criminal oxycodone possession and three accidents top the police blotter for February 28 to March 6.

On Tuesday, March 1, around 8:15 PM, Shelter Island Police arrested Benjamin Hubert Wyatt, 42, of Shelter Island, on one charge of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 7th degree, namely oxycodone, according to a police report.

“The defendant was released on an appearance ticket and directed to appear at Shelter Island Justice Court at a future date,” said SIPD Detective/Sergeant Jack H. Thilberg.

Accidents

On Monday, February 28, Amira N. Lisle of Shelter Island reported she was driving eastbound on Manwaring Road around 4:40 PM when a deer jumped out and struck the passenger side and windshield of her vehicle, causing damage estimated at more than $1,000.

Just two hours later, another driver, Francisco T. Lisa Ca Jr. of El Mirage, Arizona, was driving southbound on North Ferry Road near Manwaring Road when a deer jumped out and struck the front end of his vehicle, causing damage exceeding $1,000.

On Friday, March 4, Lisa Stamm of Shelter Island attempted to park her vehicle in a northbound space on Grand Avenue at Chase Avenue around 9:20 AM. She sideswiped a passing vehicle owned and operated by Arthur C. Luecker of Shelter Island; damage to both vehicles was more than $1,000.

Tickets and traffic stops

An officer stopped Ramon Vargas Lopez of Corona, NY, on Thursday, March 3, around 4:43 PM on Grand Avenue, for driving a vehicle with insufficient tail lamps. Upon further investigation, the officer found he was driving an unregistered vehicle with fake New Jersey Places and using an invalid license. As a result, SIPD impounded the vehicle and issued tickets for no/insufficient tail lamps, unregistered motor vehicle, improper plates, and operating out of class.

  • Anthony W. McAteer of Shelter Island on Wednesday, March 2 around 3:59 PM on Summerfield Place for visibility distorted by broken glass and driving an un-inspected motor vehicle
  • Kenneth R. DiPaola of Meriden, NH on Wednesday, March 2 around 6:52 PM on South Midway Road for failure to stop at a stop sign
  • Reyna Gonzales of Greenport on Friday, March 4 around 7:25 PM on North Ferry Road for no/inadequate lights, and unlicensed operator
  • Damon A. Gambit of Brooklyn on Saturday, March 5 around 11:29 AM on South Menantic Road for un-inspected motor vehicle and unlicensed operator
  • Diego A Martinez Gonzalez of Manhattan on Sunday, March 6 around 4:59 PM on Brander Parkway for failure to stop at a stop sign, and visibility distorted by broken glass

Officers issued six warnings to drivers in traffic stops.

Monday, February 28

An officer performed court duty. A Shorewood caller reported steam coming from a vacant house; the responding officer found nothing amiss. In two instances, residents requested welfare checks; the responding officers contacted and found the individuals safe with no cause for concern.

A West Neck caller reported two boats stored on trailers possibly on Town property; the responding officer spoke with a homeowner who confirmed the boats were on his property. SIPD officers attended defensive tactics training in East Hampton.

An officer assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle. A Center caller reported seeing via her doorbell camera a person on her property; the responding officer found the home secure with no one present. SIPD is investigating an intrusion into a Town meeting held on Zoom (the Town implemented new Zoom protocols; see our coverage here).

Tuesday, March 1

A person changing a smoke detector battery activated an alarm and attempted to call off the emergency response. A passerby reported an open door at a Center location; the responding officer closed the door. An officer assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle.

A Center caller reported an injured deer on her property; it ran off when SIPD arrived. A caller complained of a truck parked alongside a Silver Beach roadway. SIPD contacted the owner of the broken-down truck, who was attempting to remove it (on Friday, the owner installed a new battery and agreed, if that didn’t work, to tow it away).

Wednesday, March 2

In Hay Beach, a passerby reported water spurting from the side of a house; the responding officer found a valve, shut the water off, and notified the homeowner.

An animal control officer (ACO) captured and transported a sick raccoon from a Center location to a vet for humane euthanasia. A carbon monoxide monitor went off at a Menantic home; volunteers members of the Shelter Island Fire Department responded, tested the residence, and found no CO.

An officer instructed students in the Shelter Island School Pre-K 3 on how police officers keep the community safe. In the Heights, an officer assisted a caller who locked keys in a vehicle’s trunk.

A volunteer Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS) transported an aided case to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH) for further medical treatment. An officer returned a dog found at large to its owner.

Thursday, March 3

A caller reported a missing wedding band; the responding officer took the information and promised it would be returned if someone turned it in at police HQ.

SIPD assisted a person in filing DMV forms relating to lost license plates. Officers assisted a caller who fell at home but was not injured. A West Neck caller reported low-hanging wires; SIPD notified Optimum for repairs. An officer helped a driver locked out of a vehicle.

A caller reported a dog at large in the Center; the ACO reunited the dog with its owner. Around 5:20 PM, an officer assisted with directing ferry traffic in the Heights.

Friday, March 4

An officer met with 5th graders at the Shelter Island School to prepare for the DARE graduation ceremony. SIPD assisted a person who locked herself inside her fenced backyard.

A Heights caller reported a rodent infestation; the responding officer said it wasn’t a police matter and recommended the caller find an exterminator. In Hay Beach, a caller who reported finding a dead deer in his front yard in February, said he’d just found part of an arrow. While the broken piece might be from the same incident, he was concerned about possible ongoing hunting.

A caller who saw a report in the police blotter about invalid, temporary Texas license plates, asked SIPD to determine whether his plates were legit. SIPD officers attended defensive tactics training in East Hampton. Just 90 minutes apart, SIEMS transported two aided cases one to SBELIH, the other to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital (SB/SH).

Saturday, March 5

An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Menantic area and observed one violation and, with further information, discovered a second violation (see details above).

A Silver Beach caller reported seeing a tent set up for hunting; the responding officer confirmed hunters are authorized to work in the areAs a result, a. SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/SH.

Sunday, March 6

After SIPD and SIEMS assisted a person who’d fallen at home, SIEMS transported the person to SB/ELIH for further evaluation.

An officer attempted to remove a key stuck in a door but could not do so and advised the homeowner to contact a locksmith. SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/ELIH.
