PMP Summer Music School: Works-in-Progress concerts begin

Now that “The Littles” — students in the Perlman Music Program Summer Music School — are settled at the PMP Shelter Island campus, free weekly Works-in-Progress concerts will begin.

But to kick off the season, first, the faculty give a free concert. The annual faculty concert takes place Friday, July 1 at 7 PM.

Then, starting on Saturday, July 2, student Works-in-Progress concerts in PMP’s Performance Tent take place on most Fridays and Saturdays through August 13.

About ‘The Littles’

The Summer Music School is PMP’s signature program. It welcomes gifted violin, viola, and cello students ages 12 to 18 into a richly supportive musical community.

Each summer, 40 young musicians from around the world come together for a seven-week residency at PMP’s waterfront Shore Road campus. Admissions are based solely on talent. No student will be turned away due to an inability to pay.

The heart of PMP’s teaching philosophy lies in the development of the whole person. A rigorous yet inclusive and nurturing approach encourages each student to take risks and discover their voice.

PMP’s world-class faculty, led by acclaimed violinist Itzhak Perlman, oversee a curriculum of solo, chamber music, and orchestral repertoire at the highest level.

Once admitted, students are welcomed into the lifelong PMP family. “The Littles” are invited back to camp every summer through age 18.

Works-in-Progress concerts

Students may perform in Works-in-Progress concerts (WIPs) with their teacher’s approval. These provide opportunities to play recital and chamber music repertoire, attended by a warm and welcoming local audience in an outdoor performance tent.

WIPs are free and open to all. All guests on campus must be vaccinated against COVID-19 and may be required to provide proof of vaccination upon arrival. Masks are required.

Members of the Virtuoso Society may reserve seats by calling 212-877-5045 or emailing specialevents@perlmanmusicprogram.org.
