New guidelines for recycling plastics

The Town of Shelter Island accepts only those plastics marked #1 or #2 at the Recycling Center.

As you’ve probably heard, the Town of Shelter Island is no longer accepting many plastics at the Recycling Center and is instead limiting collection to those marked #1 and #2.

Today the Town issued this chart to help residents sort out these plastics from others, which for now will have to be discarded with your regular trash.

All plastics for recycling must be clean. Those labeled #1 (the numeral 1 inside a triangle) are made of polyethylene terephthalate (or PETE). Examples are soda bottles, beverage bottles, food containers, and packaging. Those labeled #2 (the numeral 2 inside a triangle) are made of high-density polyethylene. Examples are bottles for detergents, bleach, milk, and motor oil, and yogurt containers.

The Recycling Center is open daily (except Wednesdays) from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Other materials that can be recycled are newspaper and mixed paper (but none that have been contaminated with food or bodily fluids); clean corrugated cardboard; glass bottles and jars (no ceramics, light bulbs, mirrors, windowpanes or glassware); and cans made of tin or aluminum. All bottles and cans must be free of food waste before recycling. On the first Saturday of the month, the Recycling Center holds the S.T.O.P. Program (stop throwing out pollutants) from 9 AM to 1 PM. Visit the Recylcing Center page on the town website for details.
