June book club picks at Shelter Island Public Library – UPDATED

The latest work by Adriana Trigiani was the Shelter Island Book Club's pick for June; the author joins SIPL fans for a Zoom Q&A in July.

June book club picks at Shelter Island Public Library offer diverse opportunities for readers to get together (in person or by Zoom) over novels, mysteries, cookbooks, and more.

Register for Zoom chats using the library’s online calendar. You’re welcome to drop in for those in the library. Here’s a summary:

Barbara Pym Book Club

“Crampton Hodnet,” a humorous novel set at Oxford, is the Barbara Pym Book Club pick for June. Library Director Terry Lucas leads the Zoom chat on Saturday, June 10, at 2 PM as the group continues its exploration of Pym’s work. The story revolves around mis-mismatched men and women, resulting in lies and misunderstandings among the university’s dons, gossips, and undergraduates.

Shelter Island Book Club

“The Good Left Undone” by Adriana Trigiani is the Shelter Island Book Club’s pick for June. The group focuses on well-regarded contemporary fiction. It meets on Thursday, June 15, at 4:30 PM in the library. Suzanne Louer will moderate the discussion of this immersive novel set in Tuscany. Spanning three generations of artisans, the story hinges on a remarkable secret. Domenica Cabrelli, the protagonist, embarks on a journey from Viareggio to Marseille, Scotland, and Liverpool during the volatile times of World War II. A century later, her daughter and granddaughter face similar existential questions and their family’s legacy.

[NOTE: This discussion was originally scheduled for Tuesday, June 13.]

Cookbook Club

“Cook the World!” is this month’s theme for the Cookbook Club. It dovetails with the library’s summer reading program theme, “Read the World.” All are welcome to bring a favorite international dish and recipe to the library meeting on Wednesday, June 14, at 5 PM. Share delicious food and cultural experiences with neighbors.

Mystery Book Club

“When the Stars Go Dark” by Paula McLain is the Mystery Book Club pick for June. Jessica Montgomery and Jocelyn Ozolins lead the discussion via Zoom on Monday, June 26, at 5:30 PM. The book follows Anna, a San Francisco detective seeking respite in a small coastal town. However, her plans change when she becomes involved in the search for a missing teenager. As more girls disappear, Anna unravels mysteries of true crime and trauma theory with a touch of the metaphysical.
