Friday Night Dialogues: ‘Fisherfolk’ songs with Stephen Sanfilippo

Nathaniel Currier lithograph circa 1852 | Join Stephen Sanfilippo for maritime songs at the next Friday Night Dialogues.

At the library’s next Friday Night Dialogues, sing along with Stephen Sanfilippo as he performs “Fisherfolk,” songs of the maritime trades.

A native Long Islander, Sanfilippo has been sharing seafaring songs since the 1970s throughout Long Island and New England and along the East Coast from Virginia to Prince Edward Island.

The free event is Friday, May 19, at 7 PM in the Shelter Island Public Library and features songs about the work, life, and hardships of those who toil at sea. Register using the library’s online calendar.

Sanfilippo will include historical songs of Long Island clammers, eel spearers and whalers, and those who harvest Chesapeake oysters and Maine lobsters. In addition, he’ll feature songs of hardships facing the maritime trades in the 21st century.

Sanfilippo is a retired Maine Maritime Academy professor who plays several instruments. He encourages the audience to sing along and ask questions.
