Final set for SICC men’s championship

Gordon Cantley will face Bennett Karnis in a 36-hole match play to crown the Shelter Island Country Club’s 2020 men’s club champion. The final round will take place on or before August 31.

Cantley advanced after he beat John Brownlie on the 22nd hole of their championship flight match. Karnis entered the final round after defeating 2019 SICC champ Bruce Taplin in the first round.

A flight title honors go to Jim Buckland who won his match, 5 and 4, over Tom Underwood.
Ian Kanarvogel was the winner of the B flight after beating Greg Toner, 7 and 6. Jack Cortner, who served as spotter for the players during the match, called Kanarvogel’s play “magnificent.”
The C flight title goes to Tom Bliss who bested Mark Keerans, 3 and 2.

The SICC women’s club championship match between Mary Fran Gleason and Karen Gibbs was to take place Wednesday, August 26.

Golfers get it backwards

Abundant sunshine ruled for Sunday’s Backwards Tournament, which was rescheduled after last weekend’s washout. The competition called for golfers to play the course from green to tee.

A match of cards was needed to determine the first-place finisher for the men after Bruce Taplin and Jack Gibbs each scored a 37 in the 9-hole tournament. The nod went to Taplin, with Gibbs taking second.

Landing the first place spot among the women golfers was Theresa Power, who shot a 45. Ann Beckwith came in second after shooting a 52. Winner of the Honest Score Prize went to Maria Razza. Winners can pick up their cash prizes at the pro shop.

The 50/50 raffle winning ticket is 6593954. If it’s yours, bring the stub to the pro shop to claim the cash.
