COVID-19 positivity rate at 17.5 percent

The Suffolk County COVID-19 positivity rate reached a new high of 17.5 percent on Sunday, the last day for which reports were available. On Shelter Island, one more case has been reported since last week.

Of the 300,528 cases reported in Suffolk County since March 2020, 110 are attributed to Shelter Island; two residents died in the early days of the pandemic.

Of 11,997 tests administered countywide on Sunday, 2,098 turned up positive for the novel coronavirus. As a result, the infection rate for the county stood at 141.7 cases per 100K people.

Sunday’s 17.5 percent positivity rate — an all-time high since the pandemic began — drove the 7-day rolling average up to 15.6 percent In addition, there were 199.9 cases per 100K on the 7-day rolling average.

Officials say the delta and omicron variants are responsible for the surge. As the weather grows colder, people spend more time indoors. And, people are spending more time traveling and at holiday gatherings.

COVID-19 Vaccine Information, for December 26

  • 1,158,065 people have received at least one vaccine dose, an increase of 666
  • 1,044,236 people have completed their vaccine series, an increase of 543
  • 78.2 percent of the total population of 1,481,093 has received at least one dose
  • 91.1 percent of the population ages 18 and older has received at least one dose.
  • 70.5 percent percent of the total population is fully vaccinated.
  • 83.3 percent of the population ages 18 and older is fully vaccinated.
  • 81.1 percent of the population ages 12 and older is fully vaccinated.
  • 75.2 percent of the population ages 5 and older is fully vaccinated.

Hospitalization

For December 25 and 26:

  • 470 individuals were hospitalized, an increase of 54 in 48 hours
  • 130 were new admissions
  • 80 patients were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), an increase of 13 in 48 hours
  • 43 patients were in the ICU and intubated
  • 88 were discharged since the last report
  • 18,354 have been discharged since March 22, 2020
