For the newly-named Islanders, winter track season is in full swing, modified for the pandemic. The 17 students — nine boys and eight girls — are the first representing the new team name for the Shelter Island School.
The state athletic directors association has named Shelter Island a "School of Distinction" for the fifth consecutive year, a honor that recognizes scholar-athletes and was bestowed on just 56 schools statewide.
