Joanne Sherman's Off the Cuff

A former Associate Editor of the Shelter Island Reporter, she’s won multiple awards for her humor columns. Her essays have appeared in the New York Times, Southern Living, Cosmopolitan, Family Circle and other publications. She wrote a column, “Can We Talk”, in Toastmaster, a magazine for Toastmasters International, and was an award-winning humorist/commentator for WPBX radio in Southampton. She and her husband, Hoot Sherman, live on Shelter Island.

Like millions of others, our columnist has been watching the Olympics. Not much of a sports fan (except for baseball — Go Bucks!) she wonders whether her own early aptitude for falling signaled Olympic potential.
Volunteer Park
Back after a pandemic hiatus, our columnist Joanne Sherman sees the Island through other eyes and reflects on how damn lucky we all are to live in a place like this!
In her latest "Off the Cuff," Joanne Sherman recalls the temptations of cookie bagging duties during a stint at her church's summer lemonade stand.
I could tell you that when we sit down at meals, just the two of us — meal after meal after meal — we talk about better ways to fight global warming, or brainstorm about how to eliminate homelessness or whether to use light rocks or dark rocks to fill the muddy spot on the driveway. But I’d be lying.
Home sales are booming on the East End and apparently people who aren’t already real estate agents are considering it. Been there, done that. Although I'd never planned to sell real estate, it happened by accident when I rented “desk” space in a Grand Avenue real estate office.
Our Joanne Sherman wasn't going to make any New Year resolutions. But lucky for her, there's an app for that, and it guaranteed to make her a more focused, productive and kinder person.
Looking for Christmas
I have so many wonderful Christmas memories, but what happened on one particular night is my favorite. Most of the young people who were also there are parents now, some even grandparents. And I bet that they remember it, too. It was three days before Christmas. There was a foot and a half of snow on the ground and it was bitterly cold.
In 'O Christmas Tree' our columnist takes a walk down memory lane to a tree farm where making a selection included a geography quiz.
We made the police blotter last week. Someone came into our house. Not unusual, I guess, because someone’s always coming into our house: Friends, family, repairmen, assorted two-legged Bucks. All kinds of people.
A year ago at this time, I was living in a motorhome in Florida. Today I am living in a crockpot on Shelter Island. Thanks a lot Corona. For nearly two decades we’ve hit the road and headed south before the first frost and there was a reason for that. It had nothing to do with liking Florida better than Shelter Island.
