Now in its 13th year, the ARTSI open studios event has 21 artists participating.

There is no charge for admission, no ticketing, just a walk-in welcome at the open studios of painters, photographers, printmakers, digital artists, and sculptors. Artwork is available for sale, and many of the artists accept commissions.

ARTSI occurs Saturday, August 19, and Sunday, August 20, from noon to 5 PM. Follow this link for a map and information about the artists.

About ARTSI open studios

For over a decade, a dedicated group of artists who live and work on Shelter Island have opened their studios to welcome visitors of all ages.

“What’s unique about open studios is it’s an invitation to a solo show curated entirely by the artist — offering an insider’s peek into lifestyle, influences, process, and stories,” says longtime ARTSI member Roz Dimon. “Plus, you might get a glass of wine alongside a discount!”

Dimon’s work has been exhibited in galleries and shows on Long Island and New York City. She’s currently working in a unique digital painting format. Its multiple visual and audio layers are open-source coded to be explorable by all with an iPhone or smart device.

Lily Neisloss, who recently joined Sotheby’s and has attended the ARTSI Open Studios Event several times, explains that meeting artists in their milieu who can present their work is a rare and entirely different experience from visiting a gallery or museum.

“Viewers learn the arcs of these creations from the artists’ original ideas to the final work of art,” she said. “On the other hand, the artists can see and hear how their works are being perceived.”

It’s an exceptional experience for children and teens to see artists at work. The youngest attendees often find unusual perspectives and experience joy in looking at the art and meeting the artists.

The Open Studios event offers the perfect reason to hop on the ferry and enjoy a day of art, Shelter Island’s beaches, bucolic scenery, and dining. It has become a summer highlight that draws visitors from all over Long Island and the New York area. Each year, attendance has grown as word of mouth continues to spread.
