Police blotter for January 18 to 23

A wrong-way one-way accident that damaged a stop sign tops the Shelter Island police blotter for January 18 to 23, a quiet week with two tickets issued in a traffic stop.

Mitchell David Corbett of Shelter Island reported that on Wednesday, January 19, around 3:30 PM, he was traveling northbound on Grand Avenue when he realized he was going the wrong way down a one-way road. As a result, he improperly turned onto Waverly Place, where he hit and damaged a stop sign owned by the Shelter Island Heights Property Owners Corporation. The estimated damage to his vehicle and the sign exceeded $1,000.

Officers stopped and ticketed Hans Tobias Gomez Sintuj of Shelter Island on Sunday, January 23, around 10 PM on North Ferry Road for inadequate/no lights and unlicensed operator. In another traffic stop, an officer issued a verbal warning.

Tuesday, January 18

Employees at a Shorewood residence accidentally set off an alarm. An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Menantic area and observed no violations.

A volunteer Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services (SIEMS) team responded and transported an aided case to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH) for further observation.

A West Neck caller reported a possible trespass. An officer assisted a person who fell at home but was not injured. A bay constable found a kayak washed ashore in the Westmoreland area and removed it to an impound yard. An officer assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle.

Wednesday, January 19

Around 3:20 AM, a caller requested a well-being check; the responding officer found no emergency. Later that morning, a Shorewood caller reported a hunter trespassing on her property after being asked not to.

SIEMS stabilized an aided case and provided transport to Klenawicus Airfield for further transport by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital. A passerby reported a pipe running at a Silver Beach property; the caretaker confirmed the pipe at the dock was left on intentionally to circulate water and prevent freezing.

A caller followed up on an earlier complaint to say she had received an emergency fuel delivery after all. A Center caller reported receiving numerous scam calls. SIPD conducted a well-being check.

Thursday, January 20

SIPD officers participated in a telehealth conference. A caller locked out of a Center residence requested assistance.

An officer provided DARE instruction to 6th graders. The Shelter Island Fire Department responded to an automated alarm in Silver Beach; it was set off by workers cutting tile.

Friday, January 21

An officer provided DARE instruction to 5th graders. A property caretaker reported lost license plates. A HiLo caller reported that modular home components were partially blocking a roadway; the responding officer spoke with the property owner, who agreed to place cones to mark the hazard.

SIPD responded to a domestic dispute.

Saturday, January 22

A caller who repeatedly dialed 911 around 1 AM with no legitimate purpose was warned that persisting in the behavior could lead to arrest on a charge of obstruction of governmental administration.

An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement in the Menantic area and observed no violations.

Smoke from a fireplace set off an alarm at a Center residence; the homeowner forgot to open the damper. An animal control officer responded when a caller reported a bird caught in a Center home; the ACO captured the sparrow and freed it outdoors.

An officer assisted a person who fell at home but was not injured.

Sunday, January 23

SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/SLIH for further evaluation. A burglary alarm sounded at a Ram Island residence; the responding officer found the home secure and notified the caretaker.

SIEMS provided first aid and then transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for further medical treatment. A caller requested documentation for a prior incident. An officer on patrol documented graffiti on a Town-owned sign but could not ascertain when the sign was damaged.

SIEMS transported an aided case to ELIH. A caller reported a car with high beams blocking traffic; the driver followed the officer’s advice to move into a parking area. SIPD responded to a medical alert device activation; she reported she accidentally set off the device.
