Police blotter for October 5 to 11

A late-night accident where a speeding car flipped onto a beach and another where a parked car crashed into Justice Court — with no injuries in both instances — top the Shelter Island police blotter for October 5 to 11. Meanwhile, raccoons throughout the Island continue to become ill.

Accidents and traffic stops

On Friday, October 9, around 1:25 AM, while traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Oak Tree Lane, Zebulun J. Mundy of Shelter Island lost control, struck a wooden bollard, and overturned his vehicle onto the beach, according to a police report.

The airbag was deployed, and no injuries were reported. However, Mundy was ticketed for speed not reasonable and prudent. Damage to the vehicle and the bollard exceeds $1,000.

In another accident, Raymond L. Sandwald of Shelter Island had parked in the Chase Bank lot on Saturday, October 9, around 12:44 PM, and was walking toward the front of the building when he heard a loud bang. His car had rolled from the parking space about 40 feet when it hit the Shelter Island Justice Court building, damaging an HVAC unit and some brick facade.

While his vehicle wasn’t damaged, the repair estimate for the Town property exceeds $1,000.

Patricia Foulkrod of Santa Monica, CA, and Shelter Island reported on Sunday, October 10, that her vehicle was damaged while parked overnight on Washington Street. Damage to the front passenger fender was more than $1,000.

In other traffic stops:

  • Andre J. Monti of Shelter Island was stopped on Wednesday, October 6 around 10:20 AM on New York Avenue and ticketed for driving an unregistered motor vehicle
  • Two drivers were issued verbal warnings

Note: This post is based on information provided by the Shelter Island Police Department. Those named have not been convicted of a crime, and charges against them may be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found not guilty.

Tuesday, October 5

An officer completed school crossing duty (and did so throughout the school week). A Silver Beach caller reported a sick raccoon; an Animal Control Officer (ACO) captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia.

A passerby found a bicycle in the Silver Beach area; the responding officer placed it in the impound container for safekeeping.

An officer conducted radar enforcement in the Heights and issued one verbal warning.

Dispatch reported receiving an open 911 call from the Hay Beach area; SIPD contacted the caller and confirmed an accidental dial.

Erratic driving in through the Town Center prompted an anonymous complaint; the responding officer spoke with the driver, who said he’d been lost but regained his bearings.

A Ram Island caller said her leashed dog was bitten by a larger, unleashed dog while out walking. The owner of the unleashed dog ran over and got control of it. The caller wanted to document the incident but could not provide more information on the other dog owner.

Around 9:30 PM in the Center, smoke from burnt food cooking in an oven triggered an automated fire alarm and response from the volunteer Shelter Island Fire Department (SIFD).

Wednesday, October 6

A Center caller reported that she’d often observed another person’s erratic driving; the responding officer asked that she call in a report when the behavior is occurring.

A Ram Island caller reported a sick raccoon; an ACO captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia. Later, a Hay Beach caller reported a sick raccoon, but the ACO could not find it.

Thursday, October 7

SIPD helped a driver who was locked out of a vehicle. A Center caller reported losing a drill. All bay constables attended Use of Force and Baton re-certification training at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s office in Brentwood.

The caretaker at a Heights residence reports audible smoke/CO detector activation; SIFD responded and checked to ensure the place was clear of carbon monoxide.

A Center caller reported a sick raccoon; the responding ACO said the animal appeared healthy. In South Ferry Hills, a caller reported being approached aggressively by an unleashed dog on the beach. When she advanced toward the dog’s people, they became loud and argumentative.

Officers administered oxygen to an aided case until SIEMS responded and transported the person to SB/ELIH. A few minutes later, another SIEMS team responded to an aided case and transported that person to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for further medical attention.

Friday, October 8

Around 7:30 AM, a caller reported an injured deer on the side of a Center road; the responding officer canvassed the area but didn’t find the deer. SIPD assisted police in Greenport by canvassing the Island for a vehicle reported to have left the scene of an accident there.

While transiting North Channel last night, a caller stated that he observed a large white buoy submerged just below the surface, approximately 300 yards off of the Heights Beach Club dock. A Bay Constable found a swim area buoy was missing from Crescent Beach and canvassed the area from Jennings Point to Dering Point but did not find it.

SIPD heard from a caller who said a person had left her home in an intoxicated state some time ago; officers searched for but didn’t find the driver and asked that she call right away if it happens again.

Kids riding bikes, not wearing helmets, and doing wheelies prompted a caller to complain to SIPD. The caller said one child not wearing a helmet was riding behind cars parked at the Center Post Office. The responding officer asked that she notify the police when the actions are occurring so officers can take action.

Just after 11 PM, kids playing with their father’s mobile phone accidentally dialed 911.

Saturday, October 9

In a civil dispute, a caller said a neighbor planted trees on his property; the landscaper stated he would move the trees. In another dispute, a person provided documentation about court-ordered occupancy of a residence here.

On a 911 call, dispatchers could hear a woman’s voice in the background and sent officers to check on her status. She said she was trying to restart a broken phone and inadvertently activated the SOS function.

A Center caller reported a sick raccoon; an ACO captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia. Officers completed re-certification training for the Intoxilyzer 9000 device.

A dog bit a person on the hand; the responding ACO took a report from the victim and dog owner and advised the victim to seek medical treatment.

SIEMS responded to an aided case and transported the person to SB/ELIH for further observation.

An officer assisted a person with trouble with a phone charger, advised replacing the phone or batteries, and notified the daughter of the problem. A Hay Beach caller told a police dispatcher that two people were on her back deck while she was out having dinner. She said she’d call back later to speak with SIPD officers but did not do so.

A Heights caller reported a sick raccoon on a pool cover; the responding ACO could not find it.

Sunday, October 10

Around 4:57 AM, a Center caller reported a possible verbal altercation. Just after 7 AM, a Longview caller reported hearing a loud bang in the area. The responding officer patrolled and further found power outages in the Glynn Drive and Mimosa area. SIPD notified PSEG.

Around 10:30 AM, a Hay Beach caller reported a sick raccoon; the responding ACO captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia. Later, a Center caller reported a sick raccoon; the responding ACO captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia.

Someone accidentally set off a medical alert device; the responding officer checked and found no problems.

Monday, October 11

An officer assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle. Following up on a dog-at-large complaint, an ACO recognized the pooch and returned it to its home.

A West Neck caller reported a sick raccoon; the responding ACO captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia.

Around 10:20 PM, a Center caller reported hearing a loud vehicle, possibly a dirt bike; officers canvassed the area but did not find it.
