A deer v car accident tops the police blotter for December 6 to 12, a week in which pets set off a home’s burglary alarm.

Accident and traffic stops

Darrin C. Binder was traveling northbound on North Midway Road near Sleepy Hollow Road on December 9 around 7:23 AM when a deer ran out and struck his vehicle, causing damage over $1,000 to the driver’s side door and side-view mirror.

On Saturday, December 11, SIPD officers stopped and ticketed Nicole Fritton of Manhattan around 4:15 PM and Christina M. Cooley of Shelter Island around 5:10 PM for failure to stop at a stop sign on West Neck Road.

In addition, officers issued four warnings to drivers during traffic stops.

Monday, December 6

Around 3:30 AM, Shelter Island Fire Department volunteers (SIFD) responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm at a Center residence. A puff of smoke from the furnace activated the alarm.

While the SIFD ventilated the home, a volunteer Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS) evaluated and then transported an aided case for possible CO exposure to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH).

An officer reported for court duty. SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/ELIH for evaluation. At the Shelter Island School, an officer instructed 5th graders in the DARE program.

A Heights caller reported a truck traveling the wrong way on Clinton Avenue in the Heights but lost sight of the vehicle and could not provide a tag number. SIPD canvassed the area with negative results.

Just before 2 PM, SIEMS responded to an aided case; the person refused medical attention. Around 6 PM, a Center caller reported baking dogs; an Animal Control Officer (ACO) observed for 30 minutes and did not hear barking.

An officer assisted a person locked out of her house. A fire alarm activated in the Mashomack area, apparently set off by smoke from cooking. SIFD chiefs responded and confirmed the false alarm.

SIPD officers completed 4th Quarter rifle training at the Suffolk County PD range.

Tuesday, December 7

Around 7 AM, a passerby reported a downed tree in the Hay Beach area; the Shelter Island Highway Department removed the obstruction. An officer advised a resident about how to pursue a civil matter.

A passerby walked into SIPD headquarters to complain about a utility truck parked partially in the roadway; the responding officer did not deem the incident hazardous.

At the request of a Center caller, an ACO checked on the welfare of chickens and found the coop secure with adequate food and shelter for the birds. SIPD officers assisted with traffic control during the annual Chamber of Commerce tree lighting outside police headquarters.

Wednesday, December 8

A caller accidentally dialed 911; there was no emergency. An officer issued a warning to a driver during a traffic stop.

Thursday, December 9

SIPD is investigating a report from a Center caller about making an electronic payment that the vendor did not receive; the vendor’s computer previously had been hacked.

An officer instructed 6th graders in a DARE lesson. A caller mistakenly dialed 911. A passerby reported a garage door open for several days at a Hay Beach residence. The responding officer found no sign of criminal activity and closed the door but could not contact the homeowner.

Police provided a lift assist. Pets in a Center home set off the burglary alarm; the homeowner agreed to call the service provider and adjust the settings.

Friday, December 10

A caller requested a welfare check on a resident; the responding officer found the person safe at home. An officer assisted a person who reported being the victim of fraud. A resident wearing a medical alert pendant accidentally tripped the alarm.

A Center caller reported a dog at large; the responding officer canvassed the area but did not find the dog. The SIPD Detective-Sergeant completed and submitted monthly reports for the state’s eJustice program.

Around 8 PM, a caller reported a raccoon in distress near the South Ferry terminal; the ACO found a healthy raccoon that would not stay out of the road and transported it to a wildlife rehabilitator for observation.

A Hay Beach caller complained of barking dogs; it turns out the pooch had gotten out through the doggy door while its owners were off-Island.

An officer processed and lodged a bench warrant.

Saturday, December 11

An officer assisted a person who’d fallen but was not injured. A caller requested assistance verifying a vehicle identification number. Around 4 PM, a caller reported that a neighbor’s dog had been barking nightly for two weeks; the ACO observed the area during three time periods that evening but heard no barking.

Around 6 PM, a fire alarm activated at a Center residence; the owner said smoke from burnt toast set it off.

Sunday, December 12

A Silver Beach caller reported a sick raccoon; the responding ACO captured a healthy but injured raccoon and transported it to a wildlife rehabilitation center. Around 3 PM, the SIFD responded to a CO alarm due to a faulty detector.

SIEMS responded and transported an aided case to ELIH for medical attention. An officer on patrol investigated a suspicious vehicle in the North Ferry parking lot; a ferry employee said the vehicle had been there for some time.
