SIPD: Cyclist injured in e-bike accident died

The cyclist injured in an e-bike accident here this weekend died Tuesday, the Shelter Island Police Department reported.

Matthew H. Mann, 38, of St. Petersburg, FL, was identified as the operator of an e-bike (a pedal cycle with electronic assist) involved in an accident on South Menantic Road around 10:30 PM Sunday.

“Mr. Mann was transported to University Hospital at Stony Brook Trauma Center where he succumbed to his injuries” on Tuesday night, according to a SIPD report issued by Detective/Sergeant Jack H. Thilberg on Wednesday.

“The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office is continuing the investigation into the circumstances of the death, and the investigation remains pending,” the report said.

SIPD and EMS volunteers were dispatched to the accident and found Mann lying unconscious on the roadway, SIPD reported. He was air-lifted by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook.

At the time, the SIPD characterized the event as “accidental and non-criminal.”
