New hours at Recycling Center

The union representing Shelter Island Highway Department employees at the Recycling Center says Town Councilman Jim Colligan should step down after allegedly demanding that workers at the Recycling Center remove political flags from their private vehicles parked there. An impartial investigation is underway.

There will be new hours at the Recycling Center and Landfill, the Town of Shelter Island announced Saturday.

Starting Wednesday, April 1, the facility will be closed Tuesdays and Thursdays, and all other days will be open 7:30AM to 4PM (curtailed from 6PM).

“This weekly schedule will remain in effect until modified,” Town information officer Jack Thilberg said in a news release.

The STOP Hazardous Waste collection scheduled for Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the Recycling Center has been canceled. The next scheduled collection is Saturday, May 2.

The Town has modified many of its operations in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Town Hall is open, but closed to the public. The FIT Center, Youth Center and Senior Activity Center are closed until further notice.

The Town had previously announced that plastics and cardboard are not longer accepted at the Recycling Center, until further notice. This rule was enacted to limit exposure of Town employees to items that required handling and sorting before being fed into compacting machines.

Also relating to the Recycling Center, the Town issued a reminder that if you do not have Town trash bags, you can pay $2 per kitchen garbage bag at the scale house. Drive up to the scale and await instructions from the Recycling Center crew.
