Island artists in 2021 Student Art Exhibit at The Parrish

Several of the Island’s young artists are included in the 2021 Student Art Exhibit at The Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill.

Art teacher Cat Brigham says Shelter Island School contributed four collaborative pieces by students in primary grades and several individual works by students in grades 7 to 12.

The collaborative pieces, each 36 x 84 inches in mixed media (watercolors, crayons, marker, permanent marker, colored pencils on watercolor paper), are:

  • “Elements of Art: Line and Color” by PreK-4 and Kindergarten
  • “Baby Emperor Penguins” by students in grades 1 to 3
  • “Tar Beach” by students in grades 4 to 6 (inspired by the book “Tar Beach” by Faith Ringgold)
  • “Elements and Principles” by students in grades 7 to 12.
  • Individual contributors in grades 7 to 12 are: Leonardo Dougherty, Myla Dougherty, Alex Burns, Aroldo Pantaleon Castro, Andrea Napoles, Grace Olinkiewicz, Olivia Overstreet, Lily Page, Dayla Reyes, Jeremy Sabatel, Margaret Schultheis, Steven Pacheco Silverio, and Madigan Teodoru.

About the exhibit

The 2021 Student Exhibition provides an overview of the high level of creativity and accomplishment achieved in regional schools, the Parrish said in a statement. In a tradition that spans 65 years, works were contributed by schools throughout the East End.

“Artistic expression is a means of communication and the works on view serve to affirm the importance of art education this and every year,” said Parrish Education Director Cara Conklin-Wingfield.

“We are thrilled that, despite significant adjustments to the day-to-day practice, participating teachers enthusiastically met the challenge of preparing, selecting, and submitting student work.”

“Their efforts this year demonstrate a deep commitment to art education, their students, and the community, and we cannot thank them enough.”

How to see the exhibit
